The Life & Style Kameha Grand Bonn Hotel, designed by Karl-Heinz Schommer, overlooks the Rhine on land previously occupied by a factory. The old factory buildings have been integrated into the new construction through a harmonious combination of volumes and materials. The imposing mass of the hotel extends towards the river banks with its curving form, underscored by its glass and aluminum shell, which provides extensive views of the landscape, while giving the entire building a lightness and dynamism. And it achieves this despite its large size, with the hotel offering 254 rooms, seven bars and restaurants, seven conference rooms, and a spa and fitness area. The metal cladding, which covers an area of 4,860 sq m, required the creation of curved shapes and large pre-fabricated large panels. The panels used were Reynobond® composite panels, pre-painted with Duragloss® 5000 in Anodic Silver. The choice of Reynobond® was based on the formability and durability of the material. The panels are also a sustainable choice because of their use of recyclable aluminum. Parallel to the careful choice of materials, a geothermal water storage system was chosen for heating and cooling. The combined effect of the technology of the architecture, the geothermal system and building management practices is an annual saving of around 1,700 MWh of energy and a reduction of 400 tons of carbon dioxide, compared to conventional systems.
