With views of its garden surroundings, this home on the Dutch coast establishes visual and chromatic continuity between the browns and whites of its interiors and exteriors
Immersed in a lush garden setting, complete with a swimming pool, Hidden Villa stands out for the deep connection it establishes with the surrounding natural environment, while offering its residents a variety of outdoor areas.
Located on the Dutch coast, this home designed by i29 architects is organized around an open-air green courtyard and pays special attention to preserving the local historical and cultural identity.
The design team achieved visual continuity between interior and exterior spaces through extensive glazing, which creates a sense of transparency and connection with nature. This connection is accentuated by ample covered spaces, designed around the sun’s path to provide protection against excessive heat gain – a key issue given the extensive use of glass on the façade.
The home occupies two levels, with the first floor dedicated to the living areas, including a kitchen that opens onto the courtyard. The second floor hosts the sleeping quarters, which include three bedrooms.
The selection of materials such as glass, timber, stone, and concrete creates an elegant, luxurious atmosphere both indoors and out, the two unified by a color palette limited to browns and whites. The floors and ceilings extend seamlessly from the interior to the exterior, with white concrete surfaces that envelop the home and echo the rooflines.
The entrance, patio, and the upper-floor façades are clad in oil-treated ash, while the ground-level floor has light-colored brick façades to the south and east. The same finish reappears on the exterior of a small outbuilding, which houses a fourth bedroom.
Custom-built furniture and a natural stone kitchen imbue the spaces with a sense of craftsmanship, accentuated by warm, diffused light.
With a variety of seating and an outdoor kitchen, the garden was designed as a place that invites relaxation and socializing. Greenery surrounds the home, interweaving with the outdoor areas and merging nature with the structure to create a harmonious relationship among landscape, architecture and design.
