Architecture that blends into its surroundings

Gurdau Winery: A wave hidden in the landscape
By Editorial Staff -

Hidden in the hills of the Czech Republic, the Gurdau Winery is both an architectural masterpiece and a celebration of the rich winemaking tradition of the Kurdějov area by architect Aleš Fiala. Founded in 2012, the winery has 17 acres (7 ha) of vineyards. It takes its name from the original name of the historic village located at the foot of the hill, which played a vital role in supplying wine for the communities of Mikulov and Brno.

The built-up area of the project is 13,560 sq.ft. (1260 m²), but the structure is so closely integrated into, and in harmony with, the landscape as to be almost imperceptible. Incorporating 150 shrubs and trees, which emerge through the elliptical openings of the roof – conceived in turn as a large green space – the building resembles a curving hill on the landscape, so that at a distance it as good as disappears.

The winery is on two levels. The underground section is devoted to wine production and storage, while the ground-level floor has tasting and sales areas. The basement also has two guest apartments, with views over the Kurdějov vineyard.

The use of materials such as exposed concrete, glass, and oak has given the interior of the building a welcoming, bright feel. The main structure is composed of curving waves of reinforced concrete, decorated internally with slatted oak walls that follow the organic shape of the building itself. Matte black metal finishes create a harmonious contrast with the wooden walls and floor.

On the upper level is a large terrace set up for tastings with striking views across the estate. With their large windows and terraces, the interiors are in close contact with the surrounding landscape, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the changing moods of nature.

Lighting is provided by small recesses in the ceiling as well as pendant lights, which give the interiors a touch of elegance and simplicity.

A sustainable winery

Several strategies have been implemented to keep the interiors cool in summer, including thermally insulating aluminum triple glazing and oak slats in front of the windows. Also, since it’s curved, the roof provides shade for the terrace, with a system of shade cloths in front of the façade providing further protection from the sun.

Rainwater is collected in a dedicated tank and used to irrigate the vineyard, this making it possible to use the available water resources sustainably and reduce the impact on the environment.
