Palazzo del Turismo Arcobaleno
Located on Italy’s Romagna coastline, San Mauro Mare’s waterfront is getting a fresh new look with a regeneration project that, at its heart, has a brand-new pedestrian and cycling promenade.
This is not the only development in the project, though, as it also includes a complete rebuild of the town’s historic arena – now re-imagined as the Palazzo del Turismo Arcobaleno or the “palace of rainbow tourism” – within the lush setting of Parco Campana.
Designed by Laprimastanza in collaboration with architect Stefano Cornacchini, engineer Alessandro Alessandrini and geologist Aride Bucci, the single-story structure stands apart from its surroundings, rejecting a camouflage approach in favor of an active, dynamic dialogue with the surrounding urban landscape.
Echoing the form of the original building that was pulled down, the new structure opens toward the street with a façade that welcomes visitors while also providing shelter beneath a cantilevered roof. Clad in Gold vestis® aluminum panels, the building’s shimmering skin shifts with the light, embracing its sculptural, ever-changing presence. Supplied by Mazzonetto, and then transformed into slats and installed by F.lli Vitali with technical support from Mazzonetto’s The Skin division, the material hugs the structure’s geometry, amplifying its dynamic effect throughout the day.
On the other side of the building, the park-facing side, the same gold-finished cladding is used for a deep, cantilevered border that frames the glazed façade of the main hall. This expansive glass wall opens fully, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside. Seating is designed for maximum flexibility: in winter, the hall can accommodate 146 guests, but in summer, when the outdoor maxi-screen comes to life, 136 additional seats can be added to the 300 already arranged under the open sky.
The bold colors and crisp geometry of the two main façades find balance in the more linear side elevations, marked by small openings and a vertical greenery system that will gradually envelop the walls, turning them into living, fully naturalized backdrops.
The project also included revamping the outdoor space, breathing new life into the open-air cinema and its large projection screen. The result is a revitalized cultural and social hub – a place set to become a key gathering spot for locals that will also boost the town’s appeal as a tourist destination.
