One of the most demanding tasks in Porto is the intervention on the majority of the old and historical buildings of the city´s downtown. This project focuses on the renovation of a 20th century building, by converting it into a residential complex with 17 units for students and young people. The DM2 Housing, located in the protected area of the National Museum Soares dos Reis, was originally conceived as a single property. The volume was featured by the whole intrinsic characteristics of the architecture of the time, both in its functional layout and in its ornamental and aesthetic qualities. In the late twentieth century, it undergone a profound change due to a variation in its function. The property was divided in several independent spaces for commercial purposes and the lower floors were completely redesigned, while the original elements - such as wood structure of the floors and the traditional skylight above the stairs - were partially hidden or even removed. Ooda intended to rebuild the property, returning the initial function of integral housing, recovering traces of hidden identity, reinterpreting traditional elements and giving the building a new sense of contemporary housing program with a set of typologies in accordance with the current market needs. The building presents 17 apartments of T0 and T1 types, ranging from 28 to 105 sq m. The units are spread over 5 floors and accompanied by a landscaped patio intended for parking. The rehabilitation now completed, restores the original residential function, underlines the unique formal and constructive characteristics and adapt to a contemporary urban reality of the city of Porto.
