Created by Dietrich Untertrifaller, Casa R stands in a dreamlike natural setting, high in the Jura Mountains. The combination of its choice location, overlooking meadows and woods, and the client’s brief to create a sustainable home that’s integrated into its setting produced a project that’s both in harmony with the environment while oriented towards the future.
Supporting structures are timber, apart from where the home meets the ground. The floor is exposed concrete. A single flight of stairs, illuminated by a large window in the living room, leads to the spacious and bright entrance on the upper floor. A suspended loft under the roof provides space for a study and partially creates a gabled living space. This open space allows daylight to enter the entrance area on the ground floor while visually connecting the different levels of the house.
Glass, wood, and concrete characterize the entire project, both inside and out, giving it an understated, modern, but also rustic look and inviting character. The walls and ceilings are mainly silver fir, while the floors are ash. The kitchen cabinetry, featuring black Nanotech panels, creates a striking contrast with the light wood. The gable window overlooking the garden visually extends the interior outwards.
With Casa R, Dietrich Untertrifaller have created architecture that’s connected to its setting while also standing out from it, through a contemporary, sustainable language with a decisive and recognizable character.
