A timber-framed home surrounded by stone walls in the province of Verona
Casa Larun, a home designed by Zarcola Architetti, is in the old center of Tregnago, in Italy’s Verona province. This residence is notable for the way the architects have experimented with a modular construction method based on extremely narrow timber beams and columns. The timber structure creates a welcoming space with views of the garden’s greenery.
Located on a private courtyard shared with other homes, Casa Larun extends longitudinally between two other residential buildings. The house, which has two aboveground levels, is therefore only open at the front and rear, one facing north and the other south. With its extensive glazing, the southern frontage overlooks an internal garden, while the northern frontage, which includes the front door and amenities, opens onto the courtyard.
The structure was strategically built starting from the north and working towards the south. The repeated timber beams and columns create a seismic bracing system, while the perimeter stone walls reinforce the timber structure. Built with 3x3 cm timber, the same as the columns, the staircase also plays an important role in this bracing function.
The nearby Lessinia plateau was the source of inspiration for the street façade, which reflects the traditional vernacular buildings. It was constructed using Lessinia stone, a calcareous marl, laid dry, vertically, and secured with steel brackets.
With its timber framing, the large glazed façade brings to mind a glass display case set in the garden, while transforming the interiors into an extension of the surrounding green space. The façade has three distinct sections, each of which highlights different functions of the home: the living room at ground level, the bedroom on the second floor, and the staircase to the side.
The living room features a tight rhythm of fixed windows and window doors, set flush to the outside wall, that emphasizes the verticality of the façade. This pattern is repeated on the floor above but projecting outwards, emphasizing the connection with the garden. Finally, the large fixed glass windows of the staircase create a pleasant visual experience as the residents move between levels.
