Apartment block, Pergine

Burnazzi Feltrin Architetti

Apartment block, Pergine
By Francesco Pagliari -
The panoramic landscape of Ischia, a hamlet of Pergine Valsugana (Trento), is the setting for this small apartment block located between two roads on the slopes of a hill. This carefully proportioned building with a predominantly linear layout combines contemporary elements with aspects that draw meditatively on the surrounding traditional Alpine architecture and become central in the design. It was essential the project freely incorporated the visuals of the nearby lake and mountains, while alluding "jovially" to the historical buildings in the hamlet and creating a simple, efficient and controlled edifice. Climate control and energy efficiency were also important, resulting in extensive use of thermal insulation, avoiding thermal bridges, ensuring optimal orientation for the building and using contemporary technologies for heating and internal ventilation. In short, it is a structure that combines performance and comfort. It has four above-ground storeys and a basement level for the garages, but only three apartments as the top two floors form a large duplex with stunning views. The structure is compact, with a simple silhouette and elevations that nonetheless have more complex, but still coherent subsections. The initial impression is of the building in its entirety and it is only afterwards one starts to appreciate the dynamics of the relations between the walls painted in a light colour, the windows with wood frames, and the large balconies that both jut out slightly and are also vaguely protected by the walls, somewhat like a loggia. The effect is a certain duality, as one's view shifts rapidly but distinctly between the overall appearance and close-ups of the details. This is very deliberate, as the top floor shows. Here, the outer walls are at an angle, but the only breaks in the continuity are the simple intersections between the geometric planes. The use of colour is also purposeful in giving the building its identity, creating relations between the outer walls, which essentially become reference points, the recesses and the protrusions. The light coloured walls contrast with the dark hues of the set-back sections of the balconies and windows, as well as the protruding balconies. The main entrance is from the lower of the two roads, although there is also a pedestrian entrance off the upper road. The external staircase is one of the most notable architectural features, attached to the hill side of the building, on the north-east corner. The actual steps lead up to a very visible, reinforced concrete base that is then sheltered by the floor section for the balconies for the upper dwellings, where one also finds the lift incorporated into the structure. The apartments have two or three bedrooms and living rooms centred on large windows that open onto the balconies, on the upper floors, and the terrace. The lines of sight from here are to the south-east and south-west, ensuring differing views of key parts of the surrounding panorama

Burnazzi Feltrin Architetti
After working with a number of major architecture practices, Elisa Burnazzi and Davide Feltrin set up Burnazzi Feltrin Architetti in 2003. Their practice, built on the solid foundations of their passion for architecture as a creative process, and a free and ongoing interaction between ideas and skills, has been involved in a range of different areas of architecture with both public and private clients. The results demonstrate their commitment to going beyond the purely architectural to take care of every detail, including high quality design. Although only recently established, Burnazzi Feltrin Architetti has won many awards, both in Italy and abroad. In 2010 the firm was a finalist in the Fondazione Renzo Piano award for young architects, while in 2011 it was joint winner of LineaGiArch for designs by young Italian architects. In 2012 Burnazzi and Feltrin took part in the 13th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale, exhibiting at the “Edificio unifamiliare PF” (PF single-family house) project in the Italian Pavilion.
