Mapei’s R & D labs have devised a novel acrylic-resin-based product, Mapecoat TNS, for surfacing tennis courts. The product was presented at last year’s edition of Domotex. The ambition behind Mapecoat TNS was to combine all the advantages of the various playing surfaces, capturing the softness of red earth, though with the speed and bounce-true surface of synthetic or cement. This would meet various needs: physical safety for players, brightness of technique, and also the economic advantages of a surface that can be rapidly maintained and if necessary patched. Mapecoat TNS is laid on a substrate of clean cement, possibly treated with primer, the gradient being kept within 1.5%. It comes in a palette of colours or can be made to sample. It also has excellent resistance to scuffing and to all extremes of weather - from intense sun to acid smog - as well as giving the supporting substrate a lasting protection. It was already used in 2009 to make the tennis courts at Palazzolo sull’Oglio where Mapei Sport researchers are monitoring play performance and the physical stresses to players.
