Natural Light, Original Volumes

The new headquarters of Scarpa, in the town of Asolo about an hour from Venice, places employee wellbeing at the center and visually conveys the values embodied by this company that has been manufacturing unique products for the world of mountaineering and mountains for decades and prides itself on meeting its customers’ needs.

The choice of washed concrete was a deliberate decision to replicate the material effect of natural stone, and it is the most distinctive element of this design by Roberto Nicoletti Architettura e Design. The project required a complete revamp of the first floor and the raised section on the north side, where the offices were built in the 1970s. On the western side, a new building was added with a basement section.

The complex has wooden interiors and lightweight steel structures, with aluminum window and door frames and sunscreens with vertical blades in washed concrete. This material is the element that really ties this whole project together, and it was specifically chosen because of how it echoes the company’s links to the local area, as much of the village and castle are built with a rock that looks quite similar. Layout-wise, the various environments unfold around the main production area, facing onto the center of the town, with a long corridor separating the manufacturing area from a series of gardens and office spaces. The outward-facing work stations receive abundant natural light because of the use of Schüco’s aluminum façade systems, which are particularly well suited to creating original volumes.

At the main entrance, a concrete wall provides a reception space, facing a staircase that is also in concrete, against the backdrop of a vertical garden. The corridor ends in a double-height space with a floating staircase against a second wall in a green hue. The Schüco FWS 50.SI (Super Insulation) façade solution was selected specifically for the door and window frames of the entrance hall, partly because it provides the necessary mounting for large, high thermal performance glazing that optimizes transparency. The same system was used for the skylight on the stairwell, but this time accessories were added to ensure maximum water tightness. In the section that connects the existing building to the extension, built with load-bearing steel tubes, the Schüco AOC 50.SI façade system was chosen as it uses the load-bearing frame to fix the profiles, so the insulated glazing is placed directly on the steel structure. The project is completed with Schüco AWS 75.SI+ aluminum windows with double thermal insulation and Schüco ADS 75 HD.HI (Heavy Duty/High Insulation) doors with reinforced profiles. In such a setting, with people constantly coming and going, such choices guarantee durability.
