Lavazza Headquarters

As Sustainable as a Cloud

Lavazza Headquarters

Mapei has participated in the project

The Lavazza headquarters in Turin is located in the area of Via Bologna, Largo Brescia, Corso Palermo and Via Ancona, regenerating a large zone once used by Enel. The design by Cino Zucchi clearly places great emphasis on the importance of the history of the city, the district and the brand. Lavazza’s headquarters is light, innovative and flexible, just like a cloud. It is a rejection of rigid borders in which connections between interior and exterior are fundamental.

Many parts of the complex are designed as places for people to meet, be together and share ideas - the best examples are the covered entrance area, the open spaces and the relaxation zones next to the offices - and this idea of “dialogue” is found throughout the building. Sustainability was central to the project right from the conception and then articulated into concrete measures - using Mapei products was one such choice - that ensured the Platinum Certification in V2009 LEED Italia for New Constructions. This is the highest level in this rating that measures energy and environmental performances. Mapei’s involvement was to provide solvent-free, sustainable products, with low VOC emissions, that would ensure excellent air quality inside the building and the health of both applicators and final users. Mapei’s products are all EMICODE EC1PLUS certified for low emissions and they were used in this project for waterproofing, laying and grouting.

For the ceramic tile adhesive Keraflex Maxi S1 zero, Mapei offsets the CO2 emissions by purchasing environmental credits for concrete projects that help the environment, such as reforestation. For the adhesive Ultralite S2, recycled materials are used, adopting the circular economy concept. Since Mapei is located quite close to Lavazza’s headquarters, it was also possible to use products that had been mined, sourced and processed within 150 km of the building site, which is well below the 350 km set out in the LEED standard adopted.
