Hotel Excelsior Gallia is part of Milan’s history and it was recently restored and redone, including an interior overhaul, by Studio Marco Piva. The project sought to combine contemporary aesthetics with the original belle époque style of the hotel, consisting of the original historical building and a new glass and steel wing.

The complete fit out of the 234 rooms was done in collaboration with Cassina Contract (part of the Poltrona Frau Group). The latter provided the fixtures and finishings for 181 standard rooms, 51 suites and the prestigious Gallia Suite, with a living room and dining area, three bathrooms, a large walk-in wardrobe and two bedrooms. The designs for the rooms required extremely varied materials and finishings, including integrating much of the technology (plug sockets, LED lighting, video, audio and computer facilities) into the actual furniture and furnishings.

There are five types of hotel suites, inspired by the themes of art, design, art galleries, literature, and metropolitan spaces with an industrial heritage.

Ad hoc products were central to the conception of these suites, including, for example, sliding walls for the six Art Suites. These 3x2 panels are designed to separate the sleeping and living areas and the decoration is an exact replica of the art deco façade of Hotel Gallia. It was created using laser printing on a melamine surface, producing an aesthetically pleasing finish that resembles fabric, has an extended lifespan and is easy to clean and maintain.

In addition to the made-to-measure finishings and furnishings, Cassina and Poltrona Frau were also chosen to provide a number of their classic catalogue items to furnishing various hotel areas as these are highly representative of international modern and contemporary design.

The collaboration between Cassina Contract and Marco Piva has produced a wonderful example of elegance and style that can be enjoyed by Milan and visitors to the city, exalting the art, architecture and design.
