The H&M store in Naples opened in late 2011 and occupies five floors in the building once used by the famous Rinascente department store. Centrally located on Via Toledo, the complex was completely revamped after being closed for three years. The minimalist design approach foregrounds the formal and colour uniformity. The use of cutting edge products and systems greatly reduced the time needed to lay the flooring and cladding, but ensured no loss in the resistance and functionality that is essential for such a building. Mapei provided technical support and materials for the creation of the new 3,300 m2 continuous concrete floor. The old flooring was removed and a new layer of screed was put down using Topcem Pronto pre-packed mortar. This was then treated with Primer SN before undertaking a full sprinkling of Quarzo 1,2. Once this base had been prepared, self-levelling Ultratop was applied as this tough, abrasion resistant mortar with an applicable thickness of 5 to 40 mm can be left exposed or tiled. Since the client and designer wanted the colour of the flooring to remain unchanged and to ensure it endured for a reasonable period of time, Mapefloor Finish 630 was applied with a roller. This acrylic film helps make floors resistant to chemicals and physical wear.
