Milan’s Sieroterapico area once housed a plant where vaccines were produced and tested. Now, the design by Dante O. Benini and Partners for this area has completed the regeneration of this historical manufacturing zone in the heart of the city’s Navigli district. The first step involved the partial recovery of the existing buildings, now used by Milan’s new fine arts academy. This was followed by the construction of a new complex of three buildings covering about 13,000 sq m that will be used by the service industry and as laboratories.
A deliberate decision was made to optimise the context, creating a structure that integrated with the existing edifices, without encroaching. It was like creating a visual dialogue with the surrounds. At the heart of this were the concepts of transparency and permeability. The glazed facades are protected by metal brise soleil and external roll-up awnings, allowing optimal natural light and visual interaction between indoors and outdoors. The pool of water running along the buildings plays with reflections and transparency. A sense of belonging and identification pervades the entire complex because the design choices favoured the use of only a few materials and colours, while focusing on advanced technology, energy savings and environmental sustainability.
The large glazed areas ensure the interior is filled with natural light, while also allowing lovely views of the surrounding garden. The white of the walls and furniture is contrasted with the dark flooring to striking effect. The floating floor was created by Marazzi Engineering using Marazzi Tecnica’s SistemA crystallized porcelain stoneware tiles (60x60 cm). The floor finishing reflects the light that flows in through the windows, emphasising the interior interaction of light.
