The new Astraturm building in Hamburg, designed by KSP Engel und Zimmermann Architekten and completed in May 2008, is located on the site of the historic Bavaria building, built in 1971, the former symbol of the neighbourhood and famous in the rest of the country.
Situated on a hillside 20 metres above the Elbe that flows just a block away, this new skyscraper is almost 70 m high and one of the tallest buildings in Hamburg. It has 18 above ground storeys, and starting from the 7th floor, breathtaking views across the river, port and city.
Dark red parapets provide a horizontal note to the sheer glazed elevations on all sides. The Astraturm’s evanescent, transparent architecture stands in stark contrast to the mainly brick buildings nearby.
Transparency is also a major feature of the interior. Offices are separated by glazed partitioning; light penetrates in depth throughout the day while at night the building becomes a glowing beacon, marking out the Astraturm as a new landmark visible from a great distance.
The building’s spectacular architecture is reflected on the inside by the immense care that has gone into the furnishing and lighting, all designed by Tobias Grau. There are no closed walls dividing work areas and circulation routes. The different areas are marked out by the flooring materials: parquet for the corridors and fitted carpeting for the work stations.
All work areas enjoy excellent natural lighting that is supplemented at dusk by Leed and Go XT Table lamps, and by the Project X and Go XT ceiling fixtures. An avant-garde automated system regulates artificial lighting to real needs, with consequent energy saving.
Communal areas are lit by OMM Spotlights and Go Track ceiling luminaires.
The office furniture includes TG1 tables, a new Tobias Grau release, with aluminium frame, and top and modular units in MDF, leather or crystal glass.
The Tobias Grau furnishing and lighting programme creates a refined milieu throughout the tower building, which is primarily destined for creatives and people who appreciate the character of the colourful St Pauli neighbourhood nearby and the unusual architecture of this new landmark building.
