A house design by Yazgan to surround and be surrounded: The main idea of the Voronet House located in Suceava, Romania is derived from the features of the context; the slope, the view, the greenery, and the relationship to the neighbors. To achieve these, four main motivations directed the design; integration with the landscape, introverted and extraverted experiences, relationship with neighboring houses, and connecting to the panorama.
Standing on a hill, facing the Voronet River, with the Piatra Soimului Mountains to the east and the Moldova River to the North, Voronet House is located in the middle west part of the land. There are 12 private houses and a social building linking the two existing timber construction houses. The house merges with the landscape by utilizing the slope. It is a one-story, flat house with a green roof that continues the existing greenery. The specific green piece of the land is elevated to embody a house beneath it.
Introverted and Extraverted Experiences: The motivation is to provide the users of the house not only an extraverted but also an introverted experience by incorporating greenery inside the house with an inner garden open to the sky. This private garden, surrounded by the spaces of the house, offers sunlight, fresh air, and dynamic environmental changes throughout the day, such as shadows, plant movement, rain, snow, and various species using the garden. Thus, the house is not only surrounded by the greenery but it also surrounds it.
Relationship with Neighboring Houses: Although the complex is on a hill, the house is designed not to obstruct the views of the neighboring houses at the back and sides. With its green roof as a continuation of the existing slope, the house extends the garden view for the houses higher up the hill. Connecting to the Panorama: The house is designed to connect with the magnificent panorama in multiple directions. A special resting room with a rotatable mechanism is placed on the green roof to enhance the experience for the users of the house, allowing them to watch the sunrise, the mountains, rivers, and the beautiful Voronet village, and to greet neighbors. This rotatable room is detached from the roof, connected by a turning circular base that provides access to the ground floor and can rotate 180 degrees. This escape room has a triangular shape and is covered with timber, referencing the traditional timber houses of Voronet. A semi-open patio with a reflecting pool on one side defines the entrance of the house. A corridor links all the spaces within the house. The inner garden is placed between two bedrooms and the living and dining room which features a fireplace. From the kitchen, living room, and one of the bedrooms, there is access to the linear terrace facing the garden and the panorama. The bedrooms, as well as one of the bedroom’s bathroom and the common WC, have skylights.
The house suggests being a part of the landscape while providing a rich experience for its users.
