The project was born from the conditions presented by a challenging site, demanding a thoughtful approach to design and construction. Respecting the surrounding nature was the primary goal from the outset. In order to successfully complete the two-story building while accommodating the entire residential program with minimal impact, the house was suspended on stilts. This design choice ensured that the structure barely touches the ground, minimizing its influence on the ecosystem below. The elevated box, positioned at the canopy level, seamlessly integrates with the jungle environment, creating a sense of immersion in the lush Atlantic forest. This elevated position not only provides stunning views of the landscape but also allows for natural ventilation and light to permeate the living spaces, enhancing the overall harmony between the built environment and the natural world.

The white prism is suspended by a sequence of stilts, so the house barely touches the ground. The main entrance accessed by a spiral staircase, connects directly the terrace to the bedrooms. The strategy leaves no indoor alternative for the connection of spaces, it is a radical experience of the weather, the winds, the smells and the light of the jungle. Above the prism, an elevated platform overlooks the canopies. A very light structure, inside the limits of the platform, covers the living area enclosed by sliding glass panels. The transition between inside and outside spaces is extremely subtle, creating a constant and intense feeling of immersion in the Atlantic Forest. The interior design exclusively explores Brazilian culture, with the presence of national contemporary design, traditional craftsmanship and original work in every texture and object. Canopy house is a celebration of Brazil, its impressive nature combined with its infinite cultural diversity.
The cobogó, exclusively developed for this house, paints the interior with a unique pattern, cast by shadows that changes during the day. This effect adds a layer of texture in the symphony of materials. The strawns are present in the pendants, in the side tables and a even a whole wall. The diversity of fabrics is embraced by the rugs, hammocks and armchairs. The wood in its versatility appears in the sliding mashrabiya panels, the coffee table and the sculpture by José Bezerra.
Studio MK27 located in the chaotic city of São Paulo was founded in the late 70’s by architect Marcio Kogan and today is comprised of 58 architects and various collaborators worldwide.
Kogan is an honorary member of the AIA (American Institute of Architecture), Professor at Politecnico di Milano and on the board of Museum Of Art of São Paulo (MASP) and the Brazilian Museum of Sculpture and Ecology (MUBE). He leads a team of architects who, for the most part, have been working with him for over a decade.
The team, coordinated by four directors, constitutes three main squads. Diana Radomysler, Marcio’s partner since the 90s, is the author of the interior design projects. Partners since the 2000s, Renata Furlanetto and Suzana Glogowski direct the architecture team. The architect Mariana Simas, partner since 2008, is the executive director leading new projects, finance and communications teams.
