A contemporary interpretation of the archetypal A-frame shape evokes the quintessential cabin in the woods, differentiated by shifted roof volumes reminiscent of the overlapping layers of rock in the surrounding landscape. The split roof design features two intersecting gables with inset geometric windows that allow for curated views of the forest and lake, dramatic natural light and shadows during the day, while transforming into an illuminated lantern at night.
Nestled in a clearing atop a hill, the Bunkie rests lightly upon the site. Selective openings emphasize a connection to nature and blur the boundaries between indoors and out. Each interior space is designed to offer framed views of the surrounding forest or the lake below. The upper loft area includes a built-in desk with a view down to the living space on the first level and the vast lake beyond, as well as an extra space for sleeping. The bedroom is located at the rear and features a large window that offers immersive views of the forest. Natural materials, including greyed wood siding, cedar soffits, and a slatted cedar screen, sit atop the raw concrete base. As these materials patina over time, the Bunkie merges with its forested hill setting.
Sustainability is prioritized through strategic choices for materials and construction methods. Exterior walls with an R-value of 42 and triple-glazed windows allow for a minimal heating system. Flitch beams (wood on steel) reduce thermal bridging in the structural framing. The Bunkie's approach to foundations onto the natural rock contours reduces environmental impact: rather than blasting for a basement or deep foundations, the Bunkie floats on the natural topography of its rocky setting. The operable perimeter windows as well as windows at the roof split allow for ample daylighting, natural ventilation for air quality, contributing to wellness. Wood products used are FSC-rated and the few plumbing and light fixtures are low flow and low energy. It has won 5 international awards.
The Bunkie’s split roof design generates distinct elevations on either side – a tall, narrow, glazed facade facing the lake, and a wider, more opaque façade facing the forest. Located midway along the side façade, the cabin’s entrance features a walkway with a slatted cedar screen on one side which echoes the tree trunks seen through framed views at each end. The cedar slats are animated by the ever-changing west light that filters through its openings, producing a dynamic interplay of light and shadows that enhance the richness of the material and creating an engaging experience for visitors. The Bunkie's interior is functional despite its compact size. Small nooks throughout contain storage shelves or built-in benches. Expanding the area available for family and guests to stay was important to us, and the Bunkie on the Hill achieves this beautifully. The sustainable choices made in its design make it easy to maintain and inexpensive to operate year-round. We love that there was no need to blast or otherwise disturb the site, as preserving the natural landscape was important to us. It's a striking architectural gem with a classic, timeless design that we will cherish for years to come.
