The project belongs to the core of Kaifeng Ancient City Reserve, which is located on the cultural sites of the royal garden Genyue and the city walls of the Northern Song Dynasty. The design attempts to extract a unique life experience from the culture of the Song Dynasty and integrate them into modern architectural spaces. Therefore, an underground city wall museum was placed at the main entrance in the southern part of the site as the starting point for the tour route, while the business district follows the ancient city central north-south axis and the typical city spatial pattern of the Northern Song Dynasty to create a more flexible and free arrangement of streets and squares, with the modern construction methods reproducing the architectural form of the Northern Song Dynasty.

The boundary of the site follows the existing waterfront of ancient Kaifeng river, therefore the design introduces the double tour routes of both land and waterway. Through the penetration and extension of the water body, multiple tourism routes with different atmospheres and rhythms enrich the experience. The architectural layout continues the central symmetrical axis of the ancient Kaifeng city, with a architectural pattern of high in the middle and low on both sides of the main street and freely extending alleys, while following the height and scale control of Kaifeng Ancient City Reserve, making the overall buildings small volumes with a height of less than three floors, integrated with the surrounding urban texture.

The Song Dynasty was the peak of ancient Chinese civilization, which was called the Renaissance of the East by European and American scholars. The prosperity of literati gathering, the blooming of street markets day and night, and the land and water intertwined ways of travel all demonstrated advanced material culture and entertainment needs of Song people. Thousands of years have passed, people living in the Song Dynasty have left behind many poetry, calligraphy and painting works. The design starts with the research of Song calligraphy and painting works (such as Along the River during the Qingming Festival and West Garden Gathering) as references to extract a unique Song Dynasty spatial atmosphere and life experience, creating a composite space that combines Chinese gardens, traditional Chinese architectural form and freely growing city spatial texture with modern experiential commercial formats, so as to experience the Song Dynasty culture from the perspective of modern people, to upgrade the existing commercial pattern and promote the cultural revival of historical Kaifeng city.

Based on the genes of traditional Chinese culture and the unique understanding of Song Dynasty architecture, the modern Chinese architecture of this project takes traditional spirit and contemporary expression as its core, respects the inheritance of traditional culture, and integrates aesthetic trends with international consciousness, expressing the charm of Eastern aesthetics, and finding more suitable living scenes for modern Chinese people.
