The idea was mainly inspired from the past ecological heritage and historical & cultural connotation of "Shajing Ancient Ruins". Taking the restoration of Shajing oasis as the starting point, the project respects the original urban texture as much as possible. By reshaping boundary, the project tries to utilize the public space of the streets and lanes within the ancient ruins, resume its self-renewal vitality, and transform the Ancient Ruins into a multi-dimensional, diverse, pluralistic and multifunctional new concept urban park. Based on a number of public corridor systems, the project permeates the development of urban space to stimulate the generation of integrated new and old blocks and highlight the co-existing of historical memory and contemporary life.
We took this project and the surrounding cities as a complete biosystem.In terms of connection of public space,traffic linkage and dispersion,integration of landscapes,coordinating relationship between architectural styles and architectural dimension,we paid close attention to developing a kind of necessary and flexible dynamic relationship.For example,we sorted out a much more clear,continuous and clearly defined spatial network of streets and lanes based on existing ancient ruins to extend its texture into the future renewal plots and the streets of surrounding cities.The project radiate and link surrounding resources.Other urban elements were planned by considering the dynamic process of implementation from inside to outside,from chronological time series to micro and macro levels,etc.
With the strategy of building a trans-space park and revitalize the oasis,the project aims to generate a hometown-based vibrant urban oasis where the old and new elements are in harmony and ancient and contemporary cultures boost each other.By extending the ecology and integrating the old and new ruins,the project restores the natural beauty of ancient ruins.Specifically,there are five steps to revitalize the ancient ruins:Inheriting culture;Advocate new trends;Building the oasis;Integrating old and new;Restore vitality.The project successfully built Shajing District into an innovative demonstration area boasting local humanities and cultural & creative trials.The project was granted the second prize in the international competition,the special award for historical revitalization.
We established a complete urban framework system to help the revitalized historical villages and high-density urban renewal mingle with each other and influence each other, thus achieving a state of sustainable development. The theme of “bringing new trends and oasis to Shajing Ancient Ruins" we proposed fully reflects the design purpose of rejuvenating the ancient ruins and revitalizing the old space. Shajing Ancient Ruins, like a collage, shows the iterative characteristics from old to new in each changing period. Therefore, we believe that the historical block of Shajing is more like a museum going forward, and the fundamental thing to revitalize the historical block is to tap and support its endogenous impetus. In addition, we tried to cultivate it into a benign and balanced comprehensive community. Starting from the boundary, we blurred the original boundary of the ancient ruins and guided their revitalization with functions and traffic zoning. From the ruins to the city, this project not only reflects the evolution of history but also promots the natural growth of urban areas.
Revitalizing historical villages is not only to repair and transform but also to consider the positive impact on the development and construction of surrounding cities.The project scheme clearly orients itself to microcirculation,gradual progress and small scale.There is an interactive dialogue between the old and new elements,the spatial pattern is very complete.In terms of future architectural conservation direction,the strategy of providing dynamic growth for Shajing is the right option.
