As the birthplace of Ningbo, Sanjiangkou is where three rivers converge and flow into the sea. It’s the city center and rich in historical relics symbolizing the Hehai culture. The urban planning proposed an ideal development model for Sanjiangkou through linking three bays, enhancing riverside green belt, and establishing a cultural and industrial circle. Located at its riverfront, the urban planning of Qing’an Plaza starting from the bay, centered around the historical building of Qing’an Guildhall, integrates a layered structure into the existing environment. By creating new connections between the city and water from spatial, cultural, ecological, and industrial perspectives, it's to release the waterfront vitality and reshape this cultural landmark into a distinctive new identity.
Located by water and near the sea, the design of PARKTOD adopts the concept of "Sponge City" and "Greywater Recycling". The proposal features rain gardens, tidal gardens, and other ecological green spaces to significantly enhance water resource circulation. Additionally, photovoltaic power stations and lighting devices are integrated to reduce urban carbon emissions. For lighting, various types are used to create different spatial atmospheres, including city runway lighting, pole lights, plaza lighting, linear lights, and lawn lights. Through these measures, it is to establish a zero-carbon waterfront demonstration area.
Extending from the waterfront green belt, the urban design features a layered structure slowly ascending from water to city, creating a new urban network including the Twin Tower, Museum Complex, Featured Commercial Block, and other key spaces.
The landmark twin tower elevates the ground, connecting the ground level with the waterfront interface and the urban axis from northeast. Facing different directions, the towers creates an urban living room through the aerial bridge. The facade modules, featuring angled and folded glass, create a sparkling water effect that aligns with the image of a high-end hotel.
Overlooking Sanjiangkou, the Hehai Museum anchors the city core. By lowering the ground and elevating the volume, it humbly responds to Qing'an Guildhall, forming a waterfront city square and connecting public spaces from south to north. Inspired by the concept of "tide dancing", PARKTOD extends the riverfront interface, establishes an urban pedestrian system, overcomes the limitations of Yongjiang Bridge.
Continuing the traditional texture and weaving the city skyline, the Featured Commercial Block creates a transition between Qing'an Guildhall and the new tower cluster. By extracting cultural elements from the site’s traditional architecture, including courtyards, brick walls, flower windows, and opera stages, and reinterpreting them with modern architectural techniques, it forms a cultural and artistic commercial district that reflects Ningbo's local characteristics.
As an important culture heritage of Ningbo and built in 1191, Qing'an Guildhall once housed a temple to the sea-goddess Mazu. The proposal accurately identifies development issues in its surrounding area, addressing them from five dimensions: spatial, cultural, industrial, ecological, and locational. These strategies fully embody the respect for the historical context of Qing'an Guildhall and Sanjiangkou, bridging the past and future of the area.
