Hangzhou is a core city in eastern China, with a thousand-year history and stunning natural scenery. For years Hangzhou strives to establish itself as a global leader in digital technology development and grows up as a world-class city. To achieve this, the city plans to build a new central business district based on the existing industrial foundation in the west of the city, with the goal of becoming a national and international hub for technological innovation.

The low-carbon community is designed to provide a youthful and Hangzhou-style neighborhood for international and innovative talents who working in the new central district, and also offers a creative, comfortable, and healthy space for young people.

The project is located at the southwest of the new center, where the thousand-year development axis and the wetland lake chain intersect. The axis stretches from Liangzhu relics to the new center, while the wetland lake chain forms the ecological structure of the west side of the city, serving as the city central park. The project combines cultural heritage and ecological foundation.

The site is surrounded by water system, facing the wetland and lake, representing characteristics of Jiangnan and Hangzhou landscape. The public facilities gathers at the north side of the site, including international stadium, concert hall, grand theater, art and cultural center, and science museum, with two subway stations nearby.

Based on the ecological foundation and demonstration, we aim to build a low-carbon sustainable community, achieving a carbon reduction target of over 20%.

- At the urban planning level, we consider the wind-led layout of the community, integrating lakes, rivers, and parks, and introducing native plant-based parks through a four-tier park system, merging the existing ecological foundation with public vitality.

- At the architectural level, we build a vertical greening system from ground to rooftop, using local and sustainable materials, and integrating solar panels on façades and rooftops, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 6,500 tons per year.

- At the municipal infrastructure level, we introduce a 5G-based smart management platform, integrating energy, transportation, and infrastructure management.

We consider not only the sustainability and ecological environment, but also hope that the community is comfortable and vibrant, with a lifestyle that integrates with the new central business district.

We have designed an L-shaped public vitality strip along the east lakeshore and north of the new center, featuring an international youth business center, SOHO offices, international research center, public service center, creative workshops, and eco-resort hotels. The strip is connected by an east-west pedestrian street, linking each block to the new central business district. We also consider the industrial connection with the new center, including cultural arts, information media, digital economy, AI technology and so on. In terms of architecture, we have multi-level roof deck to provide diverse outdoor leisure spaces, forming an interactive place between nature and humanity.

The residence is divided into 7 small groups, each covers an area of around 150m*200m, with a safe and cozy internal courtyards. The groups are connected by a comprehensive corridor system and pedestrian-friendly streets. About residential design, we combine the first floor with the corridors, creating an internal large public park. At the rooftop, we set landscape garden and semi-outdoor space for young people to relax or exercise.

The low-carbon international community in Hangzhou is the first attempt to design a large open community that integrates nature, life, and vitality. We hope that young people living here will connect with advanced technology, have creative thinking, enjoy the city life, and experience the unique charm of Hangzhou, while also contributing to the exploration of Hangzhou's internationalization process.
