The client is a start-up incubator and their request was to have a pavilion that represented their four verticals which are: Media, Tech, Design, and Science. The idea for this project emerged from a desire to integrate the four verticals, represented by four different spaces, into a cohesive and dynamic architectural form. Each ''room'' is dedicated to the different sould of in5. The exploration led to the creation of an infinite loop that represents their continuous interaction and flow. The S-shaped surfaces pay homage to the traditional ogee arches found in Islamic architecture, blending cultural heritage with modern design. Additionally, the project is rooted in principles of sustainability, with a focus on recycling and repurposing.

The pavilion's design, based on an infinite loop of interconnected spaces, creates a fluid transition between the outdoor and indoor areas, fostering a seamless interaction with its surroundings. The surfaces facilitate natural movement and flow, encouraging visitors to explore and engage with both the pavilion and the landscape around it. One of the requirements was to have a pavilion that could be adapted to different environments and repurposed for several events. The pavilion respects cultural heritage, promotes environmental sustainability, and encourages interaction.

The project represents a significant advancement in sustainable architecture. By incorporating recycled materials and innovative manufacturing techniques, the pavilion exemplifies environmentally responsible construction practices, reducing the ecological footprint associated with traditional building methods.
Strategies implemented within the project focus on maximizing reuse and minimizing waste. The pavilion is designed for easy dismantling and recycling, minimizing waste generation. Additive Manufacturing technology allows for precise control over material usage, reducing waste during production by printing only the necessary amount of material for each component. The pavilion utilizes recycled PETG, thereby lowering its embodied carbon footprint.

The North Star pavilion is a 3d printed structure designed as an exhibition space for the Startup incubator In5 to showcase the work of its companies and as a meeting space. The pavilion has been showcased for the first time at The Dubai Design Week 2023 and it will serve future events for 2024. The pavilion is an exploration of the potential application of Additive Manufacturing and recycling technologies in architecture, showcasing the possibilities of large-scale thermoplastic printing. Structural considerations - The pavilion is constituted by a series of 3D printed panels using a post-industrial recycled PETG 30% glass fiber and UV stabilized (high stiffness/suitable for outdoors). - The panels are stiffened by flutes and a series of 15 cm ribs on one side of the panel. - Each panel is 4.2 m tall, and it’s made of two parts connected in the middle using naval glue and steel plates clamping the ribs from the sides. - Each Rib is connected to the platform using T-shaped steel connectors. The connector is fixed to the wooden platform with screws. - The panels are connected at the top. The connection happens via the ribs that meet at certain points. The ribs are then fixed with U-Shaped steel plates and screws.

The NYXO team were outstanding. Their methodology, approach, and design techniques all came together seamlessly, and we couldn't be more proud of what they have achieved for us.'' Moh'd H. H. Rajab Marketing Manager [email protected]

Curriculum

Nyxo Visionary Design is a design practice founded in 2015 by Mirko & Michele Daneluzzo. Nyxo embraces a multidisciplinary approach where technology is a tool for exploring new aesthetic languages between architecture and product design.
Mirko has a background in architecture his research focuses on exploring the intersections of computational methods, posthumanism, and bio-integrated design to envision sustainable futures.
Michele’s expertise lies in the intersection of manufacturing technology and sustainability for industrial design and product development.
The studio has developed expertise in Additive Manufacturing technologies, mastering their application across various scales. Their work has been exhibited at international events such as the Dubai Design Week, the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Beijing Biennale of Architecture and others. Notable is the inclusion of the Primitive Knife in the permanent collection of the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York.
