Piazza Duomo: inspired by the theme of the square, an essential element of urban life

The project aims to identify and enhance the potential of an existing structure that is currently incomplete and abandoned. This structure, located in front of the city's most iconic building, presents complex morphological and structural characteristics that pose significant design challenges. The project's conceptual foundation is inspired by the theme of the square, an essential element of urban life that was central to the original competition leading to the construction of the existing building. The square embodies values of welcome and interaction, aligning with Offtec's vision of creating an inclusive, intergenerational, and multifunctional space. This space is intended to serve as a communal hub, fostering a sense of belonging and engagement within the entire community.

The urban dimension of the intervention extends beyond the materiality of a single building, aspiring instead to create a new cathedral square. Like a traditional square, the building integrates seamlessly into the urban fabric with high permeability. It does not only engage with its main facade in clear relationship with the cathedral but also opens up to its surroundings. This is exemplified by the new thoroughfare from Via E. Goduti, which emphasizes the building's accessibility and traversability. Additionally, the reactivation process is further supported by the introduction of new commercial activities along Via G. Pasquali.

The objective is to preserve as much of the existing structure as possible while incorporating technological enhancements. The façade design aims to accentuate the building's distinctive features by adding technological elements that introduce a sense of novelty. In areas without a direct relationship to the cathedral, the building features a multimedia theme, with a glass skin supported by a metal frame displaying an infinite series of pixels. This setup is ideal for projecting promotional and informational videos highlighting the beauty and arts of the area. The architecture is decisive and sculptural, with the repetition of small glass cubes creating a striking effect of three-dimensionality and dematerialization of the building.

The project aims at the inclusion of a new pole, which will be a reference point for citizens in which the valorisation, knowledge and enjoyment of cultural assets and activities will be promoted, as well as, the enhancement of the commercial dimension through the promotion of activities related to the agro-food chain. The project seeks to exalt the original characteristics of the existing structure, particularly its arcades, while incorporating contemporary elements. This contemporary character is reflected in the design of the interior façades and the addition of a bridge volume on the roof, which physically unites the two sections of the building. These principles form the foundation of Offtec's vision for a renewed and avant-garde Piazza Duomo.

The project is designed with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. Key principles include environmental impact assessment, selection of sustainable materials, energy savings, reuse of existing elements, green technologies, waste management monitoring, landscape conservation, and education and awareness-raising.
