The Jaffer Mosque, a sustainable structure that incorporates green into its courtyard

When we look at the development of Renaissance and Islamic art, in the Renaissance, there was the ability to draw and describe what existed in the best and most aesthetic way on the rules of perspective, while a completely abstract understanding of aesthetics developed in Islamic art. Non-figurative abstract art, which does not allow human perspective in Islamic art, was the main reference point when designing this project. The architectural language established with geometric shapes was defined in a way that would strengthen the existence of the single-domed mosque structure. The single-domed mosque structure is defined by a geometry that descends in steps towards the ground from three corners. On the entrance front, the building becomes different by opening up for users.

We decided to make the greenery a part of the design of the building, rather than as an element next to our project. We used the green texture to define a semi-open courtyard between the classroom buildings to be built for learning the Quran and the Imam's room and the mosque, which is the main prayer area. This courtyard, which is closed on some sides and open on others, makes us feel that we are part of a building community and allows us to establish a visual and emotional connection with the green texture around.

Located in a rural area, the Jaffer Mosque is dedicated to Friday prayers: according to Islam, men are required to pray together at the mosque at noon on every Fridays. Therefore, we did not design a separate prayer area for women, which is included in mosques within the city.

We used natural materials by covering the interior of the mosque with wood and chose a sustainable material for the interior. We installed skylights on the roof to bring natural light into the interior of the mosque and aimed to reduce energy use. In the design of the building, we revealed our design vision for a green future in religious buildings by including nature and green as a design element of the building between the classrooms and the mosque.

AWARD: World Architecture Award 47th Cycle | Jaffer Mosque/DRC selected as WINNER by the votes of Honorary Members and Winners in “Designed” category at 2024, UK

Instead of a concrete building, the building is a sustainable structure that incorporates green into its courtyard and makes green one of the main elements of the design. It brings together a dome and geometric arrangements used in Islamic architecture, bringing a non-copying interpretation of mosque architecture. In general, instead of a mosque project as a flat box, the design is created by bringing together geometries aesthetically and functionally. This design establishes a psychological connection with the human scale, with its design reaching down to the human foot level. The design, which descends to the ground instead of high walls as in ordinary buildings, establishes a proportional bond between the user and the structure.

Wonderful mosque project which combines Islamic heritage in new dimensions.
