The TechnoCampus Berlin, located between City West, Siemensstadt² and the "Urban Tech Republic" science and technology park at the former Berlin-Tegel Airport, is set to become one of the most dynamic and innovative places to work in Berlin. As the name suggests, the intention for the new building project was to create a modern working environment with an attractive, dynamic campus-like character. Generous green spaces were integrated into the planning. The historic Siemens buildings with their clinker brick façades are beautifully preserved. Something similar should be expected of the new TechnoCampus buildings, which should form a family with them and be built to be just as solid and durable. The design vocabulary and materiality were adopted to create a harmonious ensemble.
The approx. 51,300 sqm site at Siemensdamm 59-62 forms the eastern boundary of Siemensstadt. The listed Wernerwerk XV on the property was built according to designs by Hans C. Hertlein in 1924/25. The former factory was redesigned in several construction phases and extended by further building sections by 1942. It is consisting of four five- to ten-storey cubically arranged building sections. The new project was created as a balanced ensemble of historic buildings and new constructions that pay tribute to the tradition of the location in their tranquillity, self-evidence, in their quality of craftsmanship. The existing complex was juxtaposed with a similarly closed, urban figure: an angular building with seven storeys (BT1) and another including a three-storey extension (BT2).
The responsibility to maintain and continue to uphold contemporary standards is acknowledged in the DNGB Platinum and WiredScore certifications for sustainable construction, sustainable building operation and the global standard for digital connectivity in buildings, among others: Promoting bio-diversity in outdoor spaces through green spaces, photovoltaics on the roofs, local district heating and electricity from acombined heat and power plant, energy saving and minimisation of artificial light through large, thermally separated wooden windows with insulating glazing, use of durable, high-quality materials, flexible room and workstation design focussed on user wellbeing, e-mobility hubs and car-sharing offers.
The TechnoCampus Berlin is being created as a balanced ensemble of the historic, listed Siemens Wernerwerk XV by architect Hans Hertlein and new buildings that pay tribute to the tradition of the location in their calm, naturalness and, above all, in their quality of craftsmanship and generous spatial sequences. The historic buildings are juxtaposed with a similarly self-contained urban figure, courtyards with green spaces are created and additionally emphasise the campus character. Brickwork, architectural concrete and metal create atmospheric, technical-looking details that support the creation of flexible, contemporary and spacious working environments in terms of both design and function.
In recent years, our sustainable refurbishment focussed on the needs of New Work has created a workspace with a model character. Digitally networked, with a flexible room layout and a comprehensive sustainability and connectivity concept. The aim: to make the site a climate-friendly, efficient pioneer with its overall concept and thus send a clear signal that the future is also being shaped responsibly in the commercial property sector.
