Bracco Headquarters, connecting the past and the future

The concept design is born from the client's request to enhance the historic family headquarters built,
starting from the 1950s, in an area between the Lambro river and the ancient "il Gambero" tavern.

The desire (expressed by the founder Fulvio Bracco in the post-war years) to preserve the farmhouses lays the foundation for the development of the project concept: reconnecting the past and the future through the restoration and valorisation of both the historic site and the ancient farmhouses.

This is how the "Bracco Campus" idea is born: a system of open spaces designed to connect then multiple company functions and general services in an environment full of history and respect for nature.

After the First World War, construction began on the new production site located east of Lambrate
suburb.

The agricultural outskirts of Milan represented the majority of the surrounding landscape.
The current urbanization has changed the relationship with the context.

The project embraced this change by enhancing a dual relationship with the surroundings through focused architectural choices:

  • urban scale, the treatment of the low-rise building and the external arrangements contributes
to restoring the relationship with Via Folli and with the nearest urban area
  • territorial scale, the new volumes of the vertical blade confront the city and the fast flow of the belt-way through the redesign of the facades and the introduction of the viewing terrace which allows the overlooking of the territory.

Compliant with ESG criteria and sustainability objectives, the project is LEED Gold certified thanks to
adopted construction and system solutions oriented towards low environmental impact and energy
containment: use of materials with a high percentage of recycled materials, MEP solutions based on
renewable sources (geothermal and solar energy), responsible use of water resources, capable of
guaranteeing high internal comfort for people and a low impact on the environment.

The collective solutions for green areas, photovoltaics and the adoption of a free cooling system with aquifer water for air conditioning will ensure the pursuit of important objectives in reducing the carbon footprint of the buildings ('Net Zero Operational carbon emissions').

The project fulfills the request to enhance the Bracco management sector through a systematic set of devolpments aimed at profoundly reinventing the architectural aspect, the way in which the buildings are used and the efficient management of consumption.

From a strategic point of view, the project tends to favor a relationship betwen dynamic and contemporary use of work spaces through the redefinition of a functional mix, spread across all buildings, capable of making the use of spaces more articulated.

Both farmhouses located to the east of the new Headquarters host collective functions (cafeteria and personal services).

These functions allow to exploit the essence of the historic buildings and make the surrounding open spaces an integral part of the recreational activities.

The design identifies the outdoor pedestrian areas as a qualitative and comfort aspect dedicated to all users of the complex.

The approach to the building takes place through a connective tissue which descends from the entrance area towards the new reception in the basement floor and then reconnects to the collective spaces around the farmhouses on the other side.

The new pathway thus becomes the trait d'union of the new Bracco Campus, undertaking the role of a quality space among the buildings aimed at facilitating movement and relationships between people.

The architecture of the new building compares with the original, also through the use of the same facade cladding, the Ceppo di Grè. This assumption traces a methodological principle trackable in the tradition of the Bracco company: planning the future in continuity with the past. These are the foundations of the intention to promote "historical continuity" through the valorization of the buildings also through the use of long-lasting materials that are also dear to the Milanese tradition.
