The site is located in the southern new city commercial core area in Changchun, surrounded by high-rise office buildings. With Guangming Park and a lake to the north, the site forms a complete street profile. Considering the scarcity of ecological conditions, the residential area is designed to prioritize sunlight, tranquility, and convenience, forming a residential area surrounded by adjacent storefronts. This creates a modern urban landscape that embodies contemporary lifestyle aesthetics and energy efficiency. Besides serving as its own commercial support, the storefronts also showcase the city's commercial vitality and foster a harmonious relationship with the park and lake views.
The southern side of the site's volumes and pathways align perfectly with those on the opposite side of the road. On the east side, there's a planned phase II high-rise office hotel complex for the project. Together, they enclose a space forming a leisurely walkway from the street corner plaza towards the north-facing lake scenery, with gentle slopes. Towards the north, there's a winding organic arrangement of lakefront shops and residential clusters divided into three main blocks, reflecting different scales echoing the natural boundary of the lakeshore, blending seamlessly with the urban landscape texture. The commercial storefronts enhance the vibrant urban activities, while the management and maintenance of lakeside greenery planning invite citizens to enjoy the natural environment.
Due to the harsh climate (with temperatures dropping to -20°C and extreme lows of -39°C), the architectural approach focuses on a south low, north high massing layout for optimal sunlight exposure to residential units. The sloping terrain allows for a flattened ground level from the south, while the two-level basement reduces excavation. Vehicle access is situated on the west and northeast sides to minimize ramp space. Exterior walls feature reinforced concrete with a 12mm insulation layer and triple-glazed aluminum windows. For lakeside commercial outlets, no basements are built to mitigate ecological disruption, with double-glazed curtain walls or stone cladding used for insulation.
The site features a 700-meter-wide street frontage to the south, with a depth ranging from 150 to 280 meters. Strategically, the residential area is centrally located to maximize sunlight, tranquility, and safety. Storefronts extend from the south to the east, culminating at lakefront storefronts to the north via an expanded street corner plaza. The residential zone is divided into three sections, echoing natural lakeshore variations and breaking up the city's long wall-like feel. Green terraces between segments connect with ecological aspects and lakeside park views.
Residential facades sport a subdued gray-white tone akin to public buildings, replacing the region's typical warm earth tones. Comprising aluminum profiles and delicate glass curtain balcony railings, they reflect the unique site environment. Recessed plazas and landscaped pools along the south street naturally serve as tranquil residential entrances. Varied storefront widths create a rhythmic streetscape.
Lakefront shops meander organically, engaging with lake views and promenade activities, reducing the scale perception of high-rise buildings. Integrating with the natural landscape, storefronts feature a simple yet effective design, with differentiated clusters enriching street visuals.
The design exudes a sophisticated ambiance, showcasing an international perspective. Nestled along the scarce lakeside, a winding strip of shops houses diverse culinary styles, adding a picturesque charm to the modern urban park. Simultaneously, the residential facades strike a balance, avoiding excessive complexity and banality, in accordance with the simple, neat, grand, and high-end aesthetic preferences typical of northern Chinese sensibilities.
