We were driven by a desire to create beauty and positively impact the city's social fabric.
We wanted to create a building that touches people's emotions—something more than just form and function. Our aim was to reconnect people to nature and its constant cycle of change. We also wanted to encourage people to connect and form meaningful communities. To accomplish all this, we reimagined the tower typology to be in harmony with and responsive to the environment and its inhabitants. We split the floor plate in two, creating breezeways and sky gardens on each floor so that nature runs through the building; these common areas will invite people to pause, breathe, and connect. In the midrise building we achieved this with rooftop amenities like community gardens and landscaped playgrounds.

Prominently located in the geographic heart of Vancouver's downtown peninsula, the site is a transition point between the business district and the historic West End neighbourhood. Revery worked closely with the Clients, the community, and City of Vancouver officials to create a development that enriches the public realm while sensitively integrating with existing structures and infrastructure.
The dynamic chamfered base of The Butterfly tower—inspired by the church's pipe organ—honours the historic First Baptist Church while maximizing the project's ground plane to accommodate new courtyards and programmed green space for the public to enjoy. The adjacent lane is beautified and integrated in the project as a contiguous and community-oriented outdoor amenity.
The project is targeting LEED Gold, 45% energy use reduction, 22% energy cost reduction, and 68% Greenhouse Gas reduction (per BAU basis) compared to ASHRAE- 90.1m.
These targets are supported by a high-performance envelope featuring insulated precast panels and a moderate window to wall ratio, heat recovery ventilators, high-efficiency four-pipe fan coil units, and an onsite low-carbon district energy plant. Breezeways will further reduce energy use by providing natural ventilation and daylight.
Innovative water management will reduce potable water use by 50% and residential usage by at least 30%.
Green mobility is encouraged with extensive bike storage, publicly accessible carshare vehicles, and an EcoWheels program providing low-emission vehicles and bikes for resident use.
The Butterfly tower and First Baptist Church (FBC) complex celebrates beauty and nature and promotes social connection. This iconic development combines a new 57-storey market residential tower with the restoration and expansion of one of Vancouver's oldest churches.
The tower is integrated with the heritage and midrise buildings, which together accommodate new community services including social housing, a daycare, café, multi-purpose community spaces, and a new counselling centre. The upgrade will enable FBC to continue providing meals, emergency care, and shelter to those in need.
The tower's unique façade is created with an innovative assembly of insulated pre-fabricated panels, high-performance glazing, and wide-span balconies that together provide exceptional thermal resistance, superior acoustic performance, and enhanced occupant comfort.
To dissolve social barriers commonly associated with highrise living, The Butterfly features outdoor "sky gardens" at each residential level. These welcoming spaces connect residents with nature and encourage social interaction. They also provide natural cooling, ventilation, and daylight, enhancing the resident experience and reducing energy demands.
A striking 2-lane, 50m swimming pool bridges the tower's main amenity space and the podium roof. Comprising high-performance, precast concrete ribs—designed to maximize spans while concealing numerous services—the pool's arched roof is an architectural centerpiece of its own.
It started with an impossible idea. We asked for pure light and fluidity; a place that could connect us to nature and to each other. Revery has given us a defining presence on the Vancouver skyline, as light and ephemeral as it is distinct—drawing in nature through daylight, fresh air and natural forms. The challenges we encountered, the solutions we uncovered and the process of bringing this work to life are all carried with lightness. The impossible idea has metamorphosed into The Butterfly.
