The Serravalle pocket gardens project at the McArthurGlen Outlet in Serravalle Scrivia stems from the need to restore a vegetal dimension to a highly mineralised context while creating oases of comfort and refreshment and renovating the shopping centre with a green outlook. The concept proposes a classical language, in harmony with the lines and colours that characterise the context in which it is inserted. Landmarks consisting of fountains connote the areas and give them identity and recognisability. In addition to their identity function, they represent elements of artistic composition, attractive playful moments for users of all ages, and contribute to weather conditions mitigation.
A detailed analysis of volumetry and compositional criteria has made it possible to combine commercial requirements with aesthetic composition in an effective and virtuous unicum, favouring views and creating visual cones. Each area is characterised by a specific planting pattern, a coherent and differentiated choice of species, a selection of flowering colours, botanical associations, and characteristics and volumetries capable of conferring an identity and recognisability within a general uniformity of language and forms.
Through a depaving operation, the gardens overlay the structure with a vegetal layer that contributes to the mitigation of temperatures, to the drainage of surfaces and to the enjoyment of the experience of these places. The Centre has been enriched with 1300 square metres of green area, 33 new trees, more than 130 species of shrubs and flowering plants, which have significantly increased the level of biodiversity, and 3 fountains with water features, elements with an effective aesthetic and temperature-mitigating impact. The choice of perennial species and vegetation suited to the context and climatic conditions of the area made it possible to lower the level of maintenance, reduce the need for water supply and ensure sustainable management of the large green areas.
Pre-treated corten steel curbs encircle and protect the flowerbeds. New draining terracotta-coloured self-locking paving is integrated into the existing fabric, linking classic designs to new design elements. Wooden slatted benches create cosy corners. Granite and concrete elements define the most important elements. Customised seats have been integrated into the flowerbeds, shrouded in vegetation, consisting of a shaped concrete base with special grain size and iroko wood slats treated with natural products to improve durability and resistance. Electrical charging sockets, as is the effect lighting, are integrated into the benches, with recessed LED strips. The guest experience is amplified by a digital technology layer spread over the entire pedestrian area, with user-friendly interaction and interface possibilities. A network of totems helps customers orient themselves in the space and get useful information, and interactive LED screens are installed on the walls. To find a suitable ground level for planting trees and shrubs, a deep drainage layer was created to prevent water stagnation. The ground level was raised up to 0.35 cm above the ground through corten steel curbs, which allowed for the combination of functional and aesthetic requirements. A rich and uncompacted soil package of approximately 1m was thus formed, which will allow for the proper and healthy development of vegetation.
Although linked by a common language, the gardens differ in botanical and thematic choices and the presence of different landmarks, to form a wayfinding and characterisation system for the areas.
