People's Park is a popular venue for Shenzhen citizens' activities, with its distinctive feature being the abundance of rose gardens. The site is lush with trees, facing the city street on the east side and adjacent to the east square of the park on the west side, with a height difference of 5.8 meters between the east and west sides. The owner hopes that the renovation plan can include the addition of roofed escalators and accessible vertical elevators on the basis of widening the outdoor stairs. The reconstructed east entrance should not intersect with the newly built public toilets in terms of pedestrian flow. The east square is popular, so how to make the east entrance interact with the east square and stimulate a more diverse range of uses is a potential goal we want to achieve.

Flow Optimization:The reconstruction project redirects the stairs towards the north to avoid congestion with the new public toilets. The escalator is arranged beneath the stairs to provide shelter from wind and rain.A vertical elevator is positioned on the south side, with ample waiting space provided for wheelchair users. Roof garden:Considering the rose as a feature of the People's Park, the east entrance plan extracts the curves of petals as the architectural outline and the plaza pavement control line. The plan cleverly avoids the large trees on the site that need to be protected. The roof slopes to the north to follow the steps of the stairs, blending with the sloping greenery. Selected flowers spread along the grassy slope towards the roof, enveloping the outdoor stairs in a garden.

In the process of implementation, multiple rounds of revisions were made to save costs and reduce carbon footprint. A portion of the original building outline was truncated at the southern end, and solving the structural stability reinforcement issues of the original retaining wall but also protecting the trees.Due to the high cost of prefabricated stainless steel decorative panels, they were replaced with on-site hand-bent panels of poorer precision during construction.Although the finished effect was not as perfect as prefabricated ones, this approach also reduced the additional carbon footprint generated by factory processing. The hand-bent curved curtain wall unexpectedly created a beautiful aesthetic, and the craftsmen responsible for the construction are proud of this handcrafted artwork.

Unveiling the Earth:The roof, covered with lush greenery, rises to the south, as if opening a crack in the earth, forming a cave space below. The building not only protects the escalator from being affected by fallen leaves but also adds a sheltered area, providing shade from the sun and shelter from the rain, while still allowing for free movement in a semi-outdoor setting.Looking down the escalator, the large tree and the lake view of the east square appearing in succession.Looking up, the view focuses, and through the opening, you can see treetops and clouds.Structure design:We found the best balance between artistry and economy through the use of an informationized model. The plan employs irregular steel structures, with a 30-meter-span column-free space supported by two diagonally arranged rectangular steel arches. The arched beams, vertical elevator shafts, and steel truss retaining walls support each other, forming the main structural system of the space.Curved stainless steel decorative panels are fixed to the main structure with dense brackets.Decorative Materials:The building's walls are decorated with a light gray cement coating, blurring the traditional vertical sense of direction.By using a minimalist material language to contrast with the topology of geometric space,it reproduces a space similar to the landscape. The semi-transparent white acrylic escalator becomes a hazy lightbox at night, combined with the nebula-like perforated lights on the walls, creating a futuristic scene.

The scheme utilizes an innovative design language to meet the needs of the owner, while introducing natural landscaping to create a poetic atmosphere. The reconstructed east entrance is filled with children playing and pedestrians stopping to take photos, and the richness of the spatial form provokes curiosity and a desire to interact.Good accessibility, artistic spaces and secure lighting help make it a popular place in the park. Both primitive and futuristic, both unique and close to life.

Curriculum

Reform was founded in 2018 in Shenzhen by Chinese architect Shusai. The founder graduated from the Berlage Institute of Architecture in the Netherlands and has worked for many years in international architectural design firms.Reform embodies a revolutionary spirit, symbolized by breaking rules and rebuilding systems. We possess the capability for integrated design in architecture, interior, and landscape, focusing on experimental projects and research.Rooted in our local context yet with a global perspective, our project scope is not confined to specific geographic regions. We believe that design, for us,is not only a tool for problem-solving and maximizing value but also about emotional resonance and cultural identity. We aspire to break boundaries and explore the connections between architecture and avant-garde art, popular culture,Eastern experiences, and future technology.Through design,we seek to reshape people's understanding of urban spaces and lifestyles. We don’t refine,we Reform.
