Porto Carlo Riva, located in Rapallo on the Ligurian coast, was the first private harbor built in Italy, inaugurated in 1975. In 2018, a violent storm severely damaged the harbor and its structures. The project aimed not only to modernize the harbor but also to create a new waterfront for the city, with a strong focus on sustainability, using eco-friendly materials and low-energy processes. The harbor’s design integrates pedestrian paths, transforming it into a public promenade. Key upgrades included new pier decks, the use of recyclable WPC slats, and a reduced number of boat moorings to accommodate larger vessels. The project also involved the refurbishment of the control tower, clubhouse, and commercial district.

Porto Carlo Riva stands as a transformative development in the coastal landscape of Rapallo, with the ambition to elevate the city’s waterfront by restoring a high-profile and prestigious marina destination. Devastated by natural forces, this harbor was not only an iconic site but also a cherished symbol of Rapallo’s identity and heritage. By regenerating Porto Carlo Riva, Bizzi & Partners brang back a space that blends luxury and functionality with the town’s storied maritime culture, setting a new benchmark for world-class marina facilities and public engagement.

The project aims to create a modern harbor while offering a new waterfront for Rapallo, focusing on sustainability and environmental impact. It uses natural, recycled, and renewable materials, with low-energy processes. The masterplan integrates the harbor as an extension of the city, featuring pedestrian paths along the mooring lines, transforming it into a public promenade. The walkways are made from "pietra di carniglia," a traditional Ligurian stone. The piers are rebuilt with new decks and precast elements, using recyclable WPC slats for the walkable surface, flanked by natural stone slabs, bollards, and service columns.

The Porto Carlo Riva project in Rapallo, an iconic waterfront destination, underwent a major revitalization after a severe storm in 2018. The regeneration of the harbor aimed not only to restore its structures but also to enhance its role as a sustainable, modern destination that revitalizes local tourism and economic growth. A key element of this redevelopment is the Torretta building, originally opened in 1975 as a control tower. Redesigned to reflect a nautical-inspired aesthetic, it now features two floors with large glass walls that enhance its transparency. The design evokes a light boat sailing on water, with projecting terraces clad in calendared alucobond panels and opaque WPC walls, materials drawn from modern nautical traditions. An external curtain system on the first floor improves thermal efficiency while protecting from the sun, mimicking a ship's deck. The Club House, also dating from 1975, has been renovated to preserve its original shape and integrate new features like a tapered profile above the entrance to shield the building from solar radiation. The design includes full-height curtain walls opening towards the sea, and natural stone cladding on the ground floor to connect the building with the historic retaining wall behind. The harbor’s revitalization has sparked economic growth, creating jobs during construction and fostering permanent roles in management and maintenance. With this renewal, Rapallo has reestablished itself as a premier nautical tourism destination, benefiting hospitality, retail, and other sectors.

The Porto Carlo Riva represents both a significant restoration and a new future for Rapallo. This development is not only about restoring a landmark but also about regenerate the local community, economy, and environment. The careful blending of sustainability with modern design ensures that Porto Carlo Riva will remain a point of reference for future generations, keeping its nautical spirit alive while offering new opportunities
