Located in the south of Yuhang, Hangzhou, the Oriental Collection adopts the philosophy of “Simple facts speak louder” from Song Dynasty as the concept of its design, where the beauty of artifacts, floral art, and shape and form can be vividly presented. In this way, a real paradise is constructed. Inspired by A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, a painting by Wang Ximeng in 1113, the project draws and recreates the shape of the village in this painting, forming a ceiling structure with Song Dynasty’s characteristics, elegant and solemn.
The scholar-officials of the Song Dynasty had a high pursuit of life. The project combines this humanistic emotion with the rich, developed hydrological culture of Jiangnan area, and builds the entrance with several elegant screens made of mountain-colored metal wrapped in green stone. The abstract shape of the ancient wine cup is used as the prototype of the reception area, which is like a boat anchored by the lake quietly waiting for the arrival of people under moonlight.
A sense of ease for a space lies in the original color and texture of objects, so as to convey nature from their original surface. Exquisiteness comes from polishing their line and shape, such as proper flow and twists of the lines, elegant and natural shape. With this attributes, these objects can integrate the space harmoniously. The hard, thin wood with several angles, and the undulating texture of the jade refracting flowing-waved light, make a shade of blue like an ethereal lake in the landscape painting. The flow of water connects the whole picture of life, and its floating form and the overlapping architectural style of the building constitute the ceiling of the academy. With the design, light can be reflected by the window and then the metal, making the space bright and pure. The Zen chair, inspired by the square chair in ancient painting Illustrations of the Eighteen Scholars, is made up of a combination of pure regular lines, with cloth and wood in details. The minimalism is an aesthetic pursuit sought after by the Chinese and western artists.
The ultimate Song style in The Oriental Collection stand the endure of time. Visitors can keep tasting the design, enjoying "follow nature", and experiencing the millennium unchanged elegance.
