This is a new brand hotel project for Tokyu Hotels & Resorts. Based on the client’s request to grow out of its uniform branding seen in chained-brand hotels, this hotel intends to become a local-oriented hotel that actively incorporates involvement with the residents and culture. The site, located near the main street and tourist, commercial, business, and entertainment areas, is defined as a place where an energetic vibe from each area interacts and generates something new. As for its interior design, we proposed the space to accommodate versatile materials, furniture, and systems: including materials that you feel the local culture and history to the application of an automated check-in system for establishing a smart and advanced hotel through digital transformation.
The building sits in the famous entertainment district of Susukino, Hokkaido, on one of the four corners of the Susukino Crossing. The hotel is on the upper floors of the new commercial complex, directly connected to the subway station for better accessibility. Because the building houses a movie theater and supermarket and attracts not only tourists but also local residents, the 7th-floor hotel lobby with restaurants and lounge space is available as part of the commercial complex. For the hotel guests, not just the 7th-floor lobby but the whole building is a common space. The hotel demonstrates a way to cater to both tourists and residents and symbolizes the function of the hotel that is not limited to overnight stays.
Local brick tiles and birch are used for interior finishings to address local production and consumption as a hotel connected to the community. The brick blocks were recycled from demolition scraps of furnaces in Hokkaido. They are used as finishings for counters and tabletop signage, representing the essence of its local history. The building has obtained Japan’s ZEB (Zero Energy Building)-ready certification which is granted to buildings with high environmentally efficient performances. It is the largest commercial and hotel complex facility to be certified as a ZEB-ready building (as of September 2023).
Not only is the hotel enjoyable to stay in, but the project also aims to connect the city and hotel by providing an enjoyable experience in both. By creating a place of interaction where artworks of local artists and materials that evoke its culture, cuisine, liquor, community, and history mix at the significant Susukino Crossing, the design provides tourists with stimulating cultural experiences that fuse with the city, while providing residents an opportunity to discover new local features. It creates a social place where people who want something attractive gather and create culture, like Andy Warhol’s studio. The city scale of Susukino, which is ideal for accommodating both tourists and residents, and the distinctive building typology of a commercial building with a hotel on the upper floors contribute to the harmonious coexistence of tourists and residents. As the urban redevelopment continues in the neighboring area, we hope the hotel and the city will further build a good relationship to nurture a more attractive destination.
As the first branch of 'STREAM HOTEL', Tokyu Hotels' new hotel brand, this lifestyle hotel aims to attract a new customer base. The interior design incorporates both innovation and universality to invite a variety of guests. It embodies the brand's concept of "DEEP COMMUNITY" by connecting travelers and locals and incorporating elements that encourage guests to convey the hotel's appeal themselves, from the hotel space to the service content.
