As the first UFC themed gym in Southwest China, RED gym intends to promote its well orchestrated fitness program with diverse items. Nevertheless, UFC's most iconic image - The Octagon - should become the focus of the design. Unifying the whole space with a strong intervention that represents the spirit of UFC is taken into consideration as our general idea. It has to be a passionate beast walking through the space that happens to be red. And it is where the name finally comes from. The body of this giant animal can be looked through, passed by, sit on and so on. Thus, it is formalized as multiple composed frames filling the whole space.
In order to attract people passing by, the concept of "frames" has started from the exterior. The layered red-framed door at the ground entrance of the mall acts as a time-space tunnel that "teleports" people to the gym on the second floor. Following the stairs to the second floor entrance, the concept of the "frames" is again presented in a striking way. The front desk on the left is wrapped in large metal panels, and the sitting area on the right is joined by two twisting frames. Then, a series of red "boxes" interlock and intersect with each other, attracting sight and access, and organizing the space in a unified and organic way. The overlapping red frames allow each space to share unified visual effects, and to be immersed in the passionate atmosphere.
The design accentuates the color of red with a variety of materialities. Under the theme of the red, we use materials such as paint-free panels, metal panels, perforated panels and acrylic boxes to render unique textures to different spaces. We also regard lighting as a material. Linear lamp bands on the ceiling suggest the outline of the space, and lead the ciculations connecting the various programs throughout the entire floor. We use different tones of colors, different textures of materials, and different conditions of lights and shadows, to show the rich variety of bright or dark, matte or glossy, rough or smoothand in the RED world.
We approached DoDesign for a design that helps us promote the sport of UFC in China, and they did not disappoint us. The exciting color and perfect execution of their unique design language had created an UFC cultural hub for enthusiasts in Chengdu. The space nicely accommodates our various fitness programs and you can feel endless creativity at each moment of the space. More importantly, they orchestrated a series of social encounters in RED gym for our guest to add more fun to their workout.
