MANUATA is an enzyme nutritional beverage brand from the Tahiti. The products are made from the local Noni fruit, also known as Haipa, meaning "long life" in Sanskrit. For the design of its Beijing flagship store, the brand wanted to showcase the natural vitality of the Tahiti rainforest in a regular mall. While thinking of the enzyme is more than just a protein/RNA but a substance trigging series of biological reaction for the our body system, the idea "one for all" comes up accordingly. To formalize this general concept, we didn't rush to start the design, but tried to explore the relationship between this space and the original power of the rainforest via other art forms. The creation of large scale abstract paintings allows us to better understand of the rough and vigorous life force.

Located in a regular shopping mall, the retail space stands out with a continuous wooden structure, so that a giant tree with intertwined "roots" can freely grow in the space. This continuous structure comes from our watercolor exploration of organic shapes. At the same time, it also functions for commercial purposes such as reception, display and negotiation. Miscellaneous spaces, such as office and warehouse, are hidden in the back of house area. The "roots" represent vitality. The continuing shapes empowers the space with a natural, rich and flowing experience. Depending on the height, the structure meanders through the interior to become the sofa or the desk or the ceiling; Or creeps up like vines to form niches; Or even emerges from the ground and becomes an island for display.

We understood that the non-linear and non-standardized nature of this design would encounter challenges in its construction. Faced with various factors such as site limit, time constraints and construction qualities, we needed to foresee the construction problems in the early design phases, in order to make sure the clients get what they saw in the renderings. In order to realize the design scheme, we have carefully thought through the selection of structures, materials and joints. Each member of the parametrically designed steel frame is individually numbered and pre-fabricated in the factory. The bending and fitting of the teak veneer has also been designed in detail to achieve a smooth and flawless surface. We treat this project not just as a simple interior design, but as a sculpture, with the completion of the art to achieve the unity from paper to reality.

Designing with DoDesign has been a delightful journey with many pleasant surprises along the way. Our Beijing flagship store is the first retail space funded by our parent company, and we aim to highlight our company’s values through the design of our space. The fluidity of the interior structure ensures a memorable and meaningful retail experience for each and every one of our customers. The design of DoDesign perfectly captures and embodies the strength and essence of our brand.
