This contemporary house was imagined for a philanthropic family that regularly hosts events, concerts, and dinner parties in support of various charities. More familiar with a traditional design style, they sought out Burdifilek to redefine their sensibilities toward a bolder contemporary expression. One of the main challenges was ensuring the home maintained a level of warmth and comfort with or without guests. Spending time with the client and understanding their lifestyle was key in conceptualizing the right interior. This took the designers on a journey to concentrate on interior architecture, finding the right furniture pieces and creating a backdrop for their client’s vast art collection.

This home is located in a beautiful residential neighbourhood of Toronto, characterized by its winding streets and majestic trees. The property is surrounded by landscaped gardens and terrasses. From the main level every room opens up to the outdoor with floor to ceiling glass doors and windows offering various views of the manicured gardens. A secondary entrance leads to a glass solarium with contemporary art pieces, providing a seating area for arriving guests. This all glass-room has potted trees visually connecting to a vine-covered wall beyond. End of hallways often have large windows offering exterior views with art pieces strategically placed as a focal point. Nature, art and interior architecture are interwoven offering a peaceful, and gallery like atmosphere.

This is a 2.3K mq home and because of the scale of some of the rooms, it needed to be suitable for quiet nights at home without feeling empty. Proportion and connections between the spaces was important. Visual fluidity is revealed through a harmonizing palette of natural woods, stone, milky hues, and soft textures. Materiality was selected to instill a sense of timeless elegance and luxurious comfort. As a result, the residence offers an inviting sensibility where understated tones are countered with dramatic sightlines that lead toward works of art, or custom pieces. Warmth is felt in cashmere or silk covered walls and custom silk carpets. Focal points were also designed offering theatrical moments. For example, instead of the proverbial chandelier in the dining room, the designers chose two adjacent features: a custom-made glass doors separating the dining room from the solarium, when closed at night, the doors create a lantern effect. The other piece visible from the dining room is a hand-carved stone staircase that spirals between three floors. Its sinuous curves are countered by a cut-glass pendant light that hangs from the ceiling. The spectacular craftsmanship enables the fixture to cast dazzling patterns. Those elements together create a unique environment and sets the tone to the experiences that awaits each guest. Every room expresses our firm’s commitment to detail, composition, and beauty. The result is a powerful visual statement that is also highly functional.

The main take away from this project is how fluid and calming the environments are. They seem to be seamless in nature but simultaneously, extremely layered. The contrast between a WOW moment, like the hand-carved stone staircase with the cast-glass pendant light, or the most subtle detail of the curved stone base boards brings elements of surprises. The unexpected as you walk through the residence makes for a refreshing experience.
