Forest Hill Residence, a relaxed and quiet environment

The owner of a textile and wallpaper company, that works with colours and patterns on a daily basis, enlisted our firm with a request that the interior of her family home be the opposite. Where she could come home to a relaxed and quiet environment free of bold colors. A second request was that architectural finishes be covered in wallpaper throughout the house. Concentration on forgoing visual distractions and embracing a sense of warmth and calm serenity was the basis for this project. Creating a harmonious interior enveloped in neutral tones and natural finishes with a level of tailored sophistication that is resistant to trends was the basis of our concept.

The dynamic with nature is actually very important in this project. The home is surrounded by ravines and trees. Upon entry into the house one has a direct view to the back of the house and into the backyard. The great room located at the back of the house spans the full width of the residence and has wall to wall windows facing the outdoor terrace and pergola. This enables an indoor/outdoor immersive experience. Another important design element is the large skylight above the sculptural staircase which allows plenty of natural light to flow throughout the day and creates a sense of awe when entering the room.

This 8000-sf. residence sits in a quiet and well-established neighborhood in the middle of the city. The architecture is Georgian in style, all in brick with stone accents. The interior plan is formal and classically Palladian in nature, but the interior reads more contemporary to suit the client’s lifestyle. The home has a main floor consisting of living, dining rooms, a library, and a great room that functions as a family room with an open kitchen overlooking the backyard. At the heart of the floor plate is a custom designed sculptural staircase, which leads to the second-floor bedrooms with a large skylight above. This space with its natural light flowing from above, has an ethereal quality one cannot miss. To create this calm environment, our team took a pared down approach. Elements such as baseboards, moldings, wall sconces and door handles were removed for a clean interior. White Thasos marble, black granite, large amount of European white oak and a limited color palette of neutral tones were used to dress the interiors. Only a play on textures provides contrasts. Custom furniture offers a perfect fit in the rooms and shows superior craftmanship. Strength comes from achieving the right balance and proportion, and that the approach of “less is more” can be comfortable to the human scale without losing its grandeur. Cohesiveness and an edited point of view with a meaningful design language is at the forefront of the design philosophy of this project.

"Our home is an oasis of tranquility expressed through simplicity without unnecessary ornamentation.” A beautiful place to gather with friends and family or come to after a hard day at work. Everything is carefully considered and very functional. There is a beautiful balance between the wall surfaces, the openings, the volumes, and the disposition and layering of our furniture and artwork. The custom pieces show spectacular craftmanship and give a personalized and unique touch to our home."
