The concept is inspired by nature and the replication of natural concepts, functions and forms in the design to maximise comfort for the people who will bring the architecture to life. From a compositional perspective, the project features the use of soft shapes in plan and elevation, both in the spaces and in the furnishings, in order to achieve a formal reference to the skyline of hills and mountains, which are visible from all the enclosed spaces. The project is based on concepts linked to the use of the neuroscience of this design: it teaches us how this type of morphology is congenial to human beings since it stems from nature and the lessons it has always taught us, which unconsciously translates into an increased propensity towards working and collaboration.
The building is located in a peri-urban setting, in contact with the countryside and visually connected to the Dolomite ranges to the north. The spaces are designed to enjoy an uninterrupted view of the natural landscape, and the “jagged” floor plan serves precisely to formally evoke this group of mountains. We have also designed the exterior area (currently under construction), incorporating the landscaping of paths and pedestrian and vehicular routes all of which are nestled in the greenery. In this framework, an outdoor extension to the first floor has been conceived, creating a "sunshade pedestrian pergola" to protect the ground floor from the elements and to serve as an open, raised, single-storey space for corporate social gatherings and events.
Natural materials have been selected (wood, resins, etc.) and a large-scale “biophilia” concept has been applied. Interior spaces are permeated by the continuous presence of vegetation, employed both as a scenic element and to exploit the biophysical properties of plants in indoor spaces: purification and passive humidification of the air, thermo-hygrometric well-being, as well as evapotranspiration. The artificial lighting is also inherently inspired by nature: a dynamic lighting system has been installed, which is a system that has the capacity to autonomously change its colour temperature and intensity according to the human circadian rhythm at various times of the day and seasons. This is made possible by software to maximise human comfort.
The project involved the construction of a new office block for a company specialising in building systems. This enterprise is undergoing a transformation, and the pre-existing space no longer reflected the vision of ownership. The macro objectives of the project were to create an office that was aesthetically in line with the values of the company, while at the same time creating working environments in which staff can work and express their full potential. Teamwork, in the sense of maximum interaction and cooperation between employees and management, is seen as a key factor in this context in order to fully achieve the objectives of the project, which in turn are derived from the overall objectives of the company. Focusing on user-centricity was the core strategy we pursued. If the individual forms the team, the team is the matrix of the company. Therefore, allowing employees to work and express themselves to the fullest is the cornerstone of this project. To successfully fulfil this mission, we started with an in-depth analysis of the requirements of the people who would be living in the new office block, creating a computer-based survey that we asked each staff member to complete anonymously. This information provided us with a knowledge base that enabled us to accurately pinpoint our target, and consequently transform each response we received into actual design and project activities.
The creation of highly customised workspaces inspired by nature, designed and created to foster quality of work and a sense of belonging to the company, has made it possible to: support increased productivity and business growth, reduce stress burdens for the staff, improve relationships between colleagues and generate a feeling of serenity and harmony, as well as a more balanced workplace environment for employees and the public.
