The basic driver of the project was to make technology an integral, and not just an integrated, component of the compositional process with the aim of reducing the energy consumption typical of office and mixed-use buildings. The rigorous mesh that envelops the building is therefore a façade, structure and technological system at the same time: there are no superfluous elements that are not consistent with the architecture. The photovoltaic glass is composed of cells that are not outside the architectural composition, but have silver connectors that enrich the design with a vibration that changes with the hours of the day. This gives a clear identity to the project and its volumes, which are characterised by a strong dialogue with the surrounding fabric.

The two new buildings, located at 20 and 21 Via Melchiorre Gioia in Milan, will serve as the new gateway to the Porta Nuova urban regeneration project, the first district in the world to be awarded dual LEED and WELL for Community certification for environmental and social sustainability. The project is characterised by its aspects of dialogue with the surrounding fabric, to which it is reconnected thanks to the adjacent public areas that have been completely redesigned with the creation of a new square that composes the mosaic of pedestrian and public areas of the Porta Nuova Gioia masterplan, extending the perimeter of BAM - Biblioteca degli Alberi Milano park along Via Melchiorre Gioia and towards the Central Station.

Achieving the highest standards of energy efficiency, water and energy consumption is reduced by more than 60 per cent thanks to innovative resource management systems. In addition, the façades integrate photovoltaic glass panes to produce more than one million kilowatts of clean energy per year. The photovoltaic panels and vertical structural elements are seamlessly joined, increasing the performance of the building envelope and acting as a visual filter between indoor and outdoor spaces. For its technological features in terms of energy efficiency and operational CO2 emissions, the east tower building will be certified LEED Platinum, WELL Gold and WiredScore Platinum.

The project is part of a landscape of not only technical but also typological innovation. I Portali represent a complex urban intervention that makes the public space complementary to the built environment, connects the Porta Nuova project with the northward development of the city and extends its spatial continuity. The organisation of the architectural artefacts, with their footprint on the ground and their size, will allow the entire area to become an urban catalyst, accessible and welcoming. The rigorous volumes, which become urban exceptions to be measured against, and the grid on the façade, an element of synthesis between structure and technology, represent the very identity of the project. In a district of European Milan, 'I Portali' bring back the architectural character of Milanese modernity through a clear formal identity, following innovative technological principles and in relation to the surrounding context.

"The awarding of the project to ACPV responds to a shared vision: that of an urban development capable of responding to the new needs of users and the community, while maintaining sustainability as a pivotal element. Thanks to a series of outstanding features, the building interprets post-pandemic needs and will be able to achieve the objective of "Substantial contribution to climate mitigation" for construction and subsequent operation, as defined by the EU Taxonomy."
