The building is between two streets: towards the South, is wider and has heavier traffic, the other is narrower, one-way traffic. The compositional matrix of the project plays on the contrast between the prospects, being characterized by their different functions. The day rooms are to the South, with broad terraces, overhanging balconies and alucobond cladding. The night zones are to the North, with smaller windows and restricted balconies. The design of the parapets give the façades a special vibration that causes the solids of the parapets to stand out against a darker, less illuminated background. The effect confers a sort of suspension on the more external terraces that seem weightless, light, almost fluctuating. This lightness is indispensable to dissimulate a bulky building volume.
The project reinterprets in a contemporary key the residential typology of the upper-class area of Bologna, characterized by buildings from various periods, situated close to the first hills and not far from the city centre. The result is an urban environment project that respects tradition while having a strongly innovative intention, one that aims to understand and reinterpret the substance of the urban scene and adapt it to contemporary functionalities and languages.
The building has been certified in the highest energy class expected in Italy for new construction (A4), achieved through a very effective envelope and a highly efficient heating and cooling system. Insulations, walls and windows have been designed to minimize heat loss and to maximize solar gains in winters. To complete the sustainability of the site, a photovoltaic system has been installed on the roof and it covers the most of electrical needs of the residential units.
The project envisages the demolition of a construction of little value and the creation of a 5-storey building, divided into eight residential units, with private gardens on the first floor and ample terraces on the higher storeys, genuine extensions of the domestic environment.
The compositional matrix of the project plays on the contrast between the prospects, the two principal façades being characterized by their different functions. The day rooms are to the south, with broad terraced spaces, overhanging balconies and alucobond cladding. The night zones are to the north, with a façade closed by smaller windows and more restricted balconies. The design of the parapets has been studied to give the façades a special vibration that causes the solids of the parapets to stand out against a darker, less illuminated background. The effect confers a sort of suspension on the more external terraces that seem weightless, light, almost fluctuating. This lightness is indispensable to dissimulate as far as possible a bulky building volume, considerably extended over the external spaces and impending over the main road.
The interiors of the dwellings make use of a very vivid and intense natural illumination that displays the rooms according to a contemporary style of life, directly linked with the external spaces of the house. Large windows optimize the natural lighting of the rooms, emphasizing the strict relationship between the internal and external spaces.
This architecture represents a perfect blend of functionality and aesthetics, sustainability, and low environmental impact. Ruggero Spagliarisi AEDES SRL
