At Aranya in Qinhuangdao, a coastal tourist resort, we reconfigured the originally planned large complex-intended to house both hotel and apartment units as a single building-into Juanzong Apartment and another hotel, creating three plazas with distinct architectural entities and unique atmospheres. This design reflects Aranya's "sojourn" concept and fosters a cohesive community experience. The ground floor of the apartment hosts diverse businesses like a restaurant, bookstore, and exhibition space, serving as the community's public space center. Refining scale, proportion, circulation, and the interior-exterior interface, the building embodies "Home on the journey," featuring the studio (8m wide, 4.5m high) overlooking a lively square, with bedrooms positioned 1.5 meters lower (3m high).
Juanzong Apartment, at the southern entrance of a residential community, is surrounded by public activity spaces. Residents often come in groups, including many freelancers working and living temporarily in this picturesque seaside community. The ground floor hosts businesses like a restaurant, handicraft shop, children's bookstore, and a corner pop-up store. This pop-up store, resembling a small showroom, can be leased to different vendors for various holidays and community events. The triangular backyard features a raised pool area, doubling as an outdoor stage for hosting various activities and gatherings during winter. We aim for a simple and modern look for the apartment, using light green precast terrazzo panels with green mineral as the main aggregate for the facade.
The ground floor of Juanzong Apartment houses various businesses: a restaurant, bakery, boutique, shoe shop, handcraft store, tea house, children's bookstore, and a corner pop-up store. The triangular backyard includes a raised pool area used as a winter outdoor stage for diverse activities and gatherings. We aim for a simple and modern look for the apartment, using light green precast terrazzo panels with green mineral as the primary aggregate. Terrazzo requires experimentation with aggregate size, type, and color for optimal visual effects at different distances. The apartment features a spacious "studio" living room, 8 meters wide and 4.5 meters high, with a balcony, open kitchen, and dining table. Sofas and bookshelves encircle the lounge area, complemented by an extended corner workspace near the window. It serves for weekday art activities like literature, painting, and music, and hosts weekend and festival gatherings. Each unit's living room faces the square, while the bedrooms face the inner courtyard, offering different views on both sides. Between the living room and bedroom lies a 2.4-meter-wide foyer, serving as both an entrance space and a transition zone between the active and quiet areas. The bedrooms in each unit have a ceiling height of 3 meters, differing by 1.5 meters from the living room height. This height difference is utilized to integrate three unit types together, creating a unique one-unit-per-floor entrance experience.
Unlike past projects, the apartment does not have fixed briefs or area indicators. Therefore, we and genarchitects have continuously discussed and adjusted the project's positioning and explored various potential uses of spaces. The ground floor hosts diverse businesses, creating nurturing environments, dining experiences, tea houses, handicraft workshops, and concept stores. Our goal, alongside the adjacent hotel, is to embody a "Visionary Life" for every resident and visitor in the community.
