The design idea of the "Z+C" house was born from the desire to make the new building dialogue with the landscape context of Lake Maggiore, placing it in a visual relationship between the Prealps to the north and the lake to the east. The architectural composition develops along two open "L"-shaped axes, starting from the entrance and rotating along the parallel direction facing the lake. Three rotated and offset volumes were generated from the two axes, in order to better relate to the external spaces and the functional needs of the clients.
The plot of the lot presents a triangular shape characterized by the restrictive limits of the municipal regulation which forced the construction of a road roundabout with an existing votive chapel in the centre. The driveway and pedestrian access to the building is located on the north-west side of the lot, which has an external parking surface. The two side streets that define the lot have a height difference of approximately 2 m compared to the construction plan of the building.
The construction of the building is aimed at paying particular attention to energy saving and therefore to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. In fact, an anti-seismic construction system in reinforced concrete with high thermal insulation was adopted, consisting of prefabricated modular elements in polystyrene, combined with latest generation systems for the generation of electricity, using photovoltaic panels.
The morphology of the land has a flat conformation at a higher level than the existing houses, which allows the new structure a view of the lake to the east and the Prealps to the north. Particular attention was paid to the orientation of the rooms which in the living area, located on the ground floor, faces the living and dining area from south-east to west, with a view towards the swimming pool. The sleeping area on the first floor allows a splendid 360° view of the entire landscape. The master bedroom bathroom is positioned on the main axis rotation angle, where the freestanding bathtub is oriented towards the mountain view.
The attention paid to the landscape context, the orientation of the rooms and the construction typology aimed at energy saving places the villa as a point of reference for the entire surrounding area.
Cuboc Studio was born in 2011 from the collaboration between Carlo Carlì and Cristina Merico. Based in Dormelletto (NO), it operates mainly in the territory of Lake Maggiore on the Piedmontese shore. The fields in which the studio places its design research are building renovation, energy requalification and the construction of new residential buildings, with particular attention to energy saving. The landscape context in which it operates, the construction typologies and the functional needs of contemporary buildings are the basis of the typological and compositional choices.
