Hillside Residence, an organic design nestled on the landscape

The setting of Hillside Residence among gardens informed the natural palette of materials. The house features natural limestone and durable Colorbond roofing to withstand the elements and provide a sleek design. Moving inside, a series of warm, timber-lined ceilings cocoon the large open spaces, while a layered approach to textures and colours introduces richness and depth. The residence’s design is predominantly set over one level, allowing our clients to live, work and entertain long-term in a place they love. The floorplan captures garden outlooks, framed by expansive glazing.

Hillside Residence is both a response to the site’s unique topography and a reflection of its residents. The site’s dramatic natural topography informed the architectural form with a tapered, organic design nestled on the hillside at its base and extending out into the treetops on the upper level. The floorplan captures garden outlooks, framed by expansive glazing. In addition to seamless indoor-outdoor living, allowing the residents to step outside and entertain on the terrace, the heroic cantilevered space doubles as a shading device in hot months by creating a cooler outdoor area underneath.

An extended cantilevered terrace and roofline were designed to reduce the headload from windows and thereby reduce the need for air conditioning in harsh summers. There are very few west-facing windows, which provides additional protection against the afternoon. Additional sustainable features include highly efficient hydronic floor heating and solar panels. Sustainability was at the core of this project to provide comfort, wellbeing and great living for the client and their families for generations to come. At RMA, true sustainability does not diminish quality. Quite the opposite; lasting value demands lasting quality.

In some ways, the Hillside Residence presents as simple and even modest. A monolithic concrete soffit to the first floor with chamfer cements the form in the landscape and creates the illusion of floating. The site’s dramatic natural topography informed the architectural form with a tapered, organic design nestled on the hillside at its base and extending out into the treetops on the upper level. Long before construction, during the design and approvals process, our client began work on the site by planting a new garden. This grew into maturity so that the vegetation flourished upon moving into the final home. Stones were sourced from fields in the region for retaining walls, anchoring the house to the hillside through natural materiality.

The process was atypical in that the client was also the builder. Collaborating with such an accomplished and intelligent builder was a privilege for the RMA team. A foundation of trust was established early, allowing a boldness of design in the knowledge that it could be executed.
