As designer, client and resident, every element of this building was crafted to reflect not only his family’s needs but also the philosophy of his integrated practice: intelligent architecture, healthy design, a tradition of craftsmanship and a deep connection with nature. As with the vision of the entire penthouse, the design goals were to use space, form, texture and technology to create a home that is simply a joy to come home to.

The design and specification of Hampden by RMA have been carefully conceived to ensure that the building serves generations. The quality of the design, its fit-for-purpose qualities, its durable materials, its handsome facade, its access to sunlight, fresh air, landscape and views, access to public amenities and proximity to local village life and Melbourne’s CBD will ensure this building is valued and cherished for years to come.
During this process, we took the time to listen and understand each client and their residence’s specific needs and styles. We were able to create something truly reflective of the client, and a truly enlightened evolution of contemporary multi-residential design. RMA is known for always delivering and consistently achieving high standards.
Acknowledging global issues of population growth and reduced renewable resources, it is our responsibility to consider increased-density residential solutions for our future. As such, the carefully conceived Hampden Apartments were created, the most sustainable building type housing many families within a comparatively small footprint of land. We believe these are the governing principles of a sustainable existence. In addition, this building design embodies the fundamental principles of sustainable design, such as a 7-star energy rating, passive solar design, low toxicity paints, window gardens, double glazing, acoustic insulation and intuitive technology.
Designed and delivered by Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors, Hampden by RMA is a collection of nine large-scale, three-bedroom luxury residences that bear all the hallmarks of our award-winning practice: intelligent design, healthy materials, crafted textures, enduring value and an intrinsic connection to location, in this case the leafy streets of Armadale.
At Hampden by RMA, we have drawn upon our deep knowledge of single residences and apartment projects to create a technologically advanced, sustainable and healthy building. With a thoughtful approach to space, light, texture and acoustics, its practical design ensures that daily needs are met, with three bedrooms, spacious living areas and large kitchens with butler’s pantries. A light palette with earthy tones was chosen to reflect sunlight and the natural quality of the bricked arches. Our practice is known for its highly collaborative approach, from working with skilled craftspeople to meticulously designing every detail of plans and finishes with clients.
It is our belief that we flourish in spaces that harness the elements of light, air and space and this building has been designed with these very principles in mind to provide its occupants with a superior quality of life.
The building is distinguished by its elegant brickwork across its three-storey facade and fence. Rob Mils personally selected a ghost grey brick by Krause Bricks principally for its honest materiality and handcrafted texture. These bricks allowed Rob and his team to create arched, deeply-set windows, now delivering subtly changing shadows across the textured facade throughout the day.
