We started with the JOE&JOE building, a former convent located in a very central area of Rome, near the church of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane, designed by Borromini.
This historic building, layered over time and centuries with Roman, Renaissance, and Mannerist architectures, inspired a concept titled "Italian Barock." This concept, perceived as innovative and disruptive, is inspired by the figure of Achille Lauro, dressed between the sacred and the profane. In February 2020, Lauro appeared at Sanremo with a look that blended sacred and profane elements, pushing the boundaries of fashion. This boldness became a key strength of the initial concept.
The choice of concept and interior design aims to add a new layer to a historic building, creating a contrast between the old and the new.

The design concept originated from the analysis of the urban context of the Monti district and the history of Rome, and more broadly, Italy. We aimed to understand the strengths of the building itself, such as the presence of an internal courtyard and common spaces adjacent to the courtyard, typical of the Roman domus, which have been fully respected.
This is complemented by a strong baroque contrast in the interior design and lighting design project, which follows the DNA of JOE&JOE, a highly innovative and unconventional brand known for playing on strong contrasts.
The entrance from Via San Carlo is characterized by a grand archway with a very tall door that remains open 24 hours a day, allowing a glimpse of the central courtyard through the lobby space and the JOE&JOE check-in area.
Regarding the energy retrofitting of the building, given its status as a historic building under the protection of the Soprintendenza, the best solutions in terms of energy savings, energy production, and water consumption have been adopted.
The restoration involved the external insulation and building envelope, including the repair of existing masonry and the replacement of windows to improve energy performance.
In terms of interior design, we have used recycled and recyclable materials, particularly for the wooden panels of the furniture and beds in all the rooms. Technical surfaces, such as carpets and PVC flooring used in the rooms, also come from recycled materials. The focus on recycled materials was aimed at maintaining a responsible approach.
The connection to the city is achieved through the courtyard, which is an authentic Italian courtyard, featuring a design for the common areas that is very innovative and deliberately contrasts with the existing building, while maintaining a harmonious balance without altering any architectural elements. The courtyard serves as a social hub where guests can spend the entire day in an environment that was once a grand reception hall, offering a wonderful view of the central courtyard.
The hotel embraces the concept of an "open house" and offers hybrid hospitality, welcoming not only travelers but also local citizens, creating a highly inclusive space.
An extra layer of street art, with works by Roman and international artists, transforms the hotel into a street art museum within a seventeenth-century building, adding an additional element of modernity and creativity.
The concept of "Italian Barock" has materialized into an open house that opens its doors to the city of Rome and to all those who pass through the streets of the Monti district. Here, they will encounter a dynamic, vibrant, and youthful space, open to everyone, from age 6 to 100.
