HOTEL JAUFENTALERHOF: architectural innovation rooted in tradition

The Residence Ambros is an extension of the existing Hotel Jaufentalerhof. The structure takes its name from the great-grandfather of the hotel's owner, Dunja Girtler, who was a prominent inhabitant of the Val di Giovo and thanks to whom the hotel was born. The goal was to evoke the strong personality of this individual through equally significant and characterful architecture. Hence the idea of developing a contemporary and innovative building while staying true to the tradition of the place and its people.

The aim is to harmoniously integrate the building into its surroundings, not hiding itself, but drawing inspiration from the built landscape and integrating with it. To achieve this, careful study was conducted on local constructions, particularly the barns that stand out among the steep slopes of the valley, defined by a construction technology entirely in wood, clear and functional, yet precise and detailed in its implementation. Thus, massive larch logs are arranged on overlapping levels to form the envelope that encloses the building. The facade structure thus reinterprets traditional architecture in a contemporary context, adapting it to the needs of the accommodation facility.

The intertwining of the logs creates a horizontal alternation of void and solid, creating a homogeneous skin that defines monolithic yet permeable volumes. What once served as a hay drying structure thanks to natural ventilation, now offers a feeling of comfort and privacy to hotel guests, overlapping with the floor-to-ceiling glass windows behind. Simultaneously, it offers unobstructed views of the mountains from all rooms, providing glimpses of the extraordinary panorama. The geometry defining the volumes beneath the wooden cladding is represented by the intersection of two parallelepipeds with pitched roofs in prefabricated concrete, housing twelve 30m² rooms and two suites in the attic. The interior design concept aimed to convey a sense of total immersion in nature within a welcoming and elegant environment. Each piece of furniture is defined by a shape and material that express the naturalness and authenticity of the place. From the larch wood used for floors and wardrobes to the fabric of the curtains in Loden, a typical Tyrolean wool, in a dark green reminiscent of fir trees, to the sinks made with local Porphyry stone.

„What began with great-grandfather Ambros, we want to preserve and develop with affection and innovation. Thus, we hope to convey this feeling to those who see and experience the building. In this place, contemporary spirit and tradition meet to create a unique living experience, with an alpine charm“

Curriculum

DEAR studio was founded in 2015, when Manuel decided to embark on the adventure of the profession together with other student companions. Strong determination and many hours of work turned a group of friends into a professional DEsign and ARchitecture studio. The team consists of more than 15 young professionals from different parts of Italy and abroad, each providing specialised input according to the needs of each project. The dynamic and efficient working reality is thus combined with an informal and sharing atmosphere. The studio’s main areas of expertise range from tourism to headquarter buildings, passing through the various scales of residential. The mission of each project is to work, from the design to the definition of the furnishing details, following personally all the phases: Conception, Execution and Construction. The finished spaces tell a story that connects people with their spaces, through a process of innovation, research, and craftsmanship.
