The building of the former granary has been adapted to become the new headquarters of a dental clinic. Before the war, the building served as one of the granaries in the Gdańsk Wrzeszcz district and used to serve the nearby Garrison. The concept of the building revolves around the adaptation of old structures, giving them a new purpose and uniqueness. This uniqueness was grounded in the idea that patients shouldn't feel inside the building like in a medical facility, but rather in an upscale hotel lobby. The Investors' dream has come true – an unconventional headquarters of the company has been created. Upon entering, it's hard to believe that we are in a clinic.
The size of the building doesn't dominate the space. The adapted structure blends with the surroundings just as it did before the renovation. The exterior structure is under conservation protection. This allows the building to connect with the history of the place. We integrated a new interior into the old building. This is a perfect example of respecting the old fabric of the city, with no interference in the surroundings. Ensuring ecological compatibility with the environment through the use of photovoltaic panels.
Skylights in the roof aid in utilizing natural light and reduce electricity consumption. Photovoltaic panels - solar energy is a clean and green form of energy. Using photovoltaic panels helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change. Water conservation is facilitated by the use of retention tanks. Ventilation with heat recovery are another innovative application that helps improve indoor air quality and increase energy efficiency. Additionally, arranging cabinets based on the sides of the world is remaining.
The facility was supposed to accommodate 15 dental offices, a prosthetic laboratory, and appropriate facilities. The foyer is illuminated by a skylight on the roof. The whole space is connected by a spiral staircase located in the heart of the clinic. The winding stairs are made of steel construction and covered with walnut veneer. The building is also equipped with an elevator and an emergency stairwell.
The owners and architects opted for natural materials that refer to the original character of the building and blend well together. Raw architectural concrete, walnut doors without straps, a part of the walls made of brick, leather hanging lamps above the receptions, leather curtains at the entrance and in the conference room, and steel seat fixings combined with leather inserts.
The rooms are arranged around the center, which is a three-story high foyer. A piano has been placed on a mezzanine suspended between floors. Patients have the opportunity to listen to live classical music. To ensure perfect acoustics throughout the building, 150m2 of soundproofing in various forms was applied: sprays, upholstery, pictures, as well as directional sound screens. The rooms on the upper floor have a height of almost 6m and gained a unique shape thanks to the roof structure covering them.
The clinic in Gdansk Wrzeszcz is not a typical healthcare center, it gives a new perspective on architecture in the world of medicine.
IFAgroup was founded in 2014 by Kamil Domachowski, architect educated in Gdansk University of Technology in Poland, and has completed many projects of individual houses, including award-winning ones, as well as public buildings. In spring of 2024 he became one of the winners of the „40under40® program for 2023-2024”.
„Looking for the essence of things in the context, devoiding unnecessary additions is a creative process that I wish to follow. A project is an idea that brings all the elements together: function, tasks, dreams, emotions, design. Finding this bond is essential to create an individual value. We study the form inquisitively, we trim excess details like with a sculpture, while ultimately paying great attention to detail. Working on a model is an essential stage in the creative process.”
