What makes THE SHRED truly unique is its thoughtful approach to merging the old with the new. This duality is central to THE SHRED's design philosophy, where the building emerges as both a fragment of the past and a beacon of the future, stitching together the fractured urban landscape. Part of the existing structure is preserved, while new elements are seamlessly integrated to create a building that is intelligent, efficient, and entirely contemporary. While maintaining the existing structure, the project allows for the creation of open, flexible floor plans, perfectly suited for modern offices and adaptable to the needs of the present day. This balance is accentuated through the contrast of heavy and light materials, with dark and bronze tones adding a sophisticated chromatic interplay.

Rising in the Porta Nuova district, the building is located in the silent coexistence of two distinct urban fabrics: on one side, the timeless, human-scaled architecture that speaks to the city's heritage, and on the other, the towering modern skyline that symbolizes progress and transformation. This duality is central to THE SHRED's design philosophy, where the building emerges as both a fragment of the past and a beacon of the future, stitching together the fractured urban landscape.

THE SHRED is a true smart building. Equipped with advanced systems for lighting and HVAC control, a building management system (BMS) allows for real-time control, supported by mobile applications, and multi-use sensors. The infrastructure is designed to minimize energy consumption, ensuring the comfort, safety, and well-being of its occupants while seamlessly integrating with the broader electrical grid. This commitment to sustainability is further reinforced by the building’s reliance on renewable energy sources, including photovoltaic panels and geothermal systems, making it a model of environmental responsibility. Thanks to these features, the project aims for the future attainment of target certifications such as LEED Platinum for Core & Shell, BREEAM, WELL, and WiredScore.

The architect has crafted a volume that operates on two levels: horizontally, it aligns with the rhythm of neighboring historic structures, while vertically, it rises to engage in a conversation with the towering edifices that define the new Milan. This duality allows the lower body to align with the city and the upper part to join the context of the Porta Nuova buildings, creating a real rupture, from which the building takes his name. This architectural dialogue is also about the materiality and textures used, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity. The lower levels, clad in textured materials and glass, ground the building in its urban context. The upper levels, lighter, exude transparency and openness, symbolizing Milan’s evolving skyline. The interaction between interior and exterior is a core design aspect, with more than 1,500 sqm of terraces offering stunning views of both the historic city and the modern skyline. Inside we also find a secret garden— 250 sqm space within the heart of the structure. In addition to approximately 500 sqm of amenities located on the first floor and directly connected to the inner courtyard, retail spaces may also be added to further activate the street. THE SHRED offers flexible and sophisticated spaces. Large windows flood the interior with natural light. The lobby, with its sleek lines and open layout, exudes modern elegance, while the rooftop terrace of c.700 sqm provides panoramic views of Milan.

THE SHRED stands as an iconic representation of Milan’s architectural evolution. It is a building that not only embraces the future, but it also honors the past—a fragment stitching together the fractured scales of the city. Through its intelligent design, materiality, and cutting-edge technology, THE SHRED offers a vision of urban harmony, where progress and tradition coexist in perfect balance.
