The primary design concept is to create a new town art hub that subtly balances contemporary art with daily life. To harmonize the art center with the surrounding residential areas and natural landscape, the design employs large-scale structures complemented by smaller-scale elements. This approach reduces the sense of oppression in the neighborhood while accommodating diverse functions. The expansive structure facilitates seamless exhibition flow and creates spacious plazas and intimate courtyards for public activities, meeting various needs. Inspired by nearby houses, the ground-level, small box-like spaces host daily activities, benefiting the local community. It respects the town's traditions while embracing its future, serving as a beacon of cultural revival.
The project is located in a small town in Lishui, Zhejiang, surrounded by a densely populated old residential area, which is surrounded by mountains and bordered by the Ou River to the north, the design maintains the integrity and continuity of the old street. The upper section, with its large-scale structure, houses art exhibitions in a continuous, floating form that echoes the distant mountains. The lower components are scaled to the daily street level, with small box spaces for various functions. Materials like blue bricks, green tiles, and weathering steel soften the concrete structure, adding warmth and humanity. As a result, the Art Center becomes a landmark that both respects the historical features of the ancient town and provides modern facilities.
The design process incorporates modular design for precise material control and waste reduction, alongside a construction waste management plan for recycling and reuse. By selecting locally sourced materials, such as blue bricks and small green tiles, and incorporating recycled materials, the project maximizes reuse and minimizes waste. Adaptive reuse of existing structures and materials reduces demolition waste. The center also employs low-carbon materials, prefabricated components, energy-efficient systems, and passive solar design elements. Natural ventilation, daylighting strategies, and high-performance HVAC systems further reduce operational carbon emissions.
The Art Center features two main areas: contemporary art exhibition spaces and daily activity spaces for town residents. It combines large suspended galleries with smaller ground-level buildings, supporting various functions. The upper level includes interconnected exhibition spaces of different sizes, creating a unique viewing experience with galleries and corridors following the building's contours. Above the lobby, multiple skybridges are connecting in various directions, guiding visitors to the rooftop platform. To create a sense of lightness for the skybridges, they are suspended from the roof beams using cable rods. The ground level hosts commercial spaces, retail shops, and leisure facilities, arranged to echo the traditional town's texture. Open courtyards and elevated walkways enhance public accessibility, creating vibrant spaces for community gatherings and daily life. Various-sized courtyard squares enrich the art center’s public nature: the large square serves as a venue for town gatherings, while the small courtyard, centered around century-old trees, continues the tradition of communal spaces found in towns, often centered around large trees.
The project creates a vibrant, inclusive space that integrates with Guyanhuaxiang's daily life, balancing large exhibition areas with human-scale elements to foster community and belonging. It harmonizes the art center with the town's traditional architecture while incorporating modern functions. The goal is to enhance cultural infrastructure, promote urban development, and boost tourism, resulting in a multifunctional cultural center combining art, education, and community activities.
